Hey everyone, so Im making my return to the gaming world and primarily Project reality.

Its a budget build but also trying to get the best system for PR.

i5 650 3.2ghz duel core
8gigs of G.SKILL ripjaw DDR3
MSI MSI N460GTX 768MB
500gig HDD
MSI P55-CD53 motherboard (basic, might upgrade later)

thats the base system, How well do you think PR would run?

Thanks for the input guys

Gigabyte 460GTX 1GB ddr5 soc
4GB RAM

Screen 1920x1200
All High
50-100fps on most maps

It will run most likely maxed depending on your resolution. You definitely don't need so much memory though, save some more money by dropping that down to 6 or even 4 GB.

Thanks Maj Pain! looks like I can go ahead and order the last few parts.

Theres only a 30$ difference from 4gig to 8gig... Figured I might as well the system will only cost me 750 once all said and done. Thanks for the input guys

Please pay the tiny bit extra for the 1GB GTX460, it's worth it (it not only has more vram but also more ROPs and a higher memory bus width; it translates into a few more frames at any resolution :)

Good point, I didn't notice his card wasn't 1GB. :p
At any rate, it will get you a few more frames, and probably several more at resolutions above 1920x1080

i5 650

I would be tempted to try to find $50 more and get a quad core, my reasoning being quads run ARMA (PR soonish) alot better and future games will benefit hugely from it too.

i5 2500K

But don't know your budget, just I'd be concerned if I wanted to move onto PRARMA I'd regret it later.

You make a great point... I keep forgetting that dual cores were introduced to the i5 range, which made me rage so much... I always think of i3 = dual cores, i5 = mid quads, i7s = high quads but now there's the i5 duals :-x

Definitely go the extra for the 2500, SFNovster... drop the ram down if you have to. I believe he'd need a slightly different motherboard though right (I haven't been following the new i5 range too much)?

===============

i5 2500k $225
Gigabyte P67A-UD3R $138
6GB DDR3 $65 ($68if you prefer kingston)
500GB WD black $70
GTX460 1GB or HD6850 $~180-200
Powersupply? Seasonic S12II 520W $70

Total (shipping inclusive)- $750-760 depending on ram/graphics choice

Edit again: Dunno how taxes in the US work like that but I'm guessing it's silly and those prices don't include tax, so if your tax rate is ~10% like australia then you're looking at a tax inclusive price of ~$825-$840

Yep you would need a different motherboard. The 2500k is part of the Sandybridge family which all use LGA-1155 sockets while the older ones use LGA-1156.
As for the GPU, I would advise against an HD 6850 because it's comparable to the 5830 in performance. If you're looking for something in that range you could probably find a 5870 for cheaper. The GTX 460 will get better performance probably similar to the 5870 except I would suggest going with Nvidia for their more reliable drivers and native Physx.

Um... not sure which reviews you've been reading, but the GTX460 is nowhere near a 5870; maybe you're confusing it with the GTX470...?

The HD6850 and GTX460 are on par price & performance wise...

And from recollection you need a second card to run physx anyway so its a moot point, is it not? It's been a long time since I've cared about that stuff, so perhaps the graphics cards now process the physics as well (which I suppose could make sense)... link to article if you wouldn't mind :)

Having been with both Nvidia and ATI over the years, their drivers are much the same, both being overly bloated and generally unnecessary to update unless a new game comes out that doesn't play nicely with the older ones [rare in both camps, except on multi-gpu solutions]

Your post comes across as a little green-fanboyish;

Yea I meant the GTX 470, my bad. :o ops:
In which case I would suggest that over a GTX 460 or 6850.
Physx can run on a single GPU. You can find that information on Nvidia's website.
Trust me, I am no one's fanboy, in fact I have an ATI 5850 running in my system right now...
Plus now that I think of it, in the GTX 460/470 range I would rather go with a 5870 because from what I've heard the 460 and 470 run quite hot an with less power efficiency. I must have still been thinking of the new GTX 570 and 580 since they've been on my mind a lot recently, which I would rather get instead of the 6xxx cards.
