I don,t know if it,s exactly this topic is about this question, but for god sake, what is exactly support mean in military efforts? because i am starting get mad about thinking about it.

because, Heavy weapons are support, tanks are support, aircraft is support, ships are support. and yet sometimes even infantry is support.

what that fuck is that? SUPPORT MEANS IN MILITARY EFFORTS?

for me, the most smartest conclusion about support is that unit being not the backbone unit, if you are in urban fight infantry is the backbone force, if you are in plains tanks are the backbone force, so goes on.

to me a classic support unit is a medic or a engineer or a transport, something that is not build or trained to kill people.

but what makes a unit be a support unit? and is a support action? please don,t call it is a artilhary fire or a bombing run. okay?

Support in military terms means anything that can help the main objective force.

For example, say in Inurgency there is an cache that needs to be destroyed, that cache is the objective. If, hypothetically, there has been 1 squad of infantry to destroy it, that squad is the objective force. Anything that helps the objective force to complete their objective (in this case, destroying the cache) is known as a support unit.

Transport helis are support because they help to get the objective force into a position from where they are able to begin work on completing their objective. The same goes for APCs and Light Vehicles (Jackals and Humvees)

Armour is support because it is used to put accurate fire on the objective in order to disrupt enemy forces, making it easier for the objective force to achieve their objective. CAS and Jets work in this fashion too.

Snipers are support because they help to provide intel for the objective force.

Engineers and logistics are support because they can clear paths for the objective force by clearing mines or laying bridges, while logistics can help to transport re-inforcements and re-arm and supply the objective force, helping them achieve their objective.

Hope this helps!

No worries mate, its just a shame that not everyone employs these units as such.

Here's an example to MrTomRob's point. Say the SAS have an objective to rescue someone or take an objective they usually have a SFSG Sqn/Batt (Special Forces Support Group) on stand by or with them.
But it does not have to involve special forces. It can be any military force.
