reading the manual is a must for beginners. Trust me. Lots of people told me to do it and I wish I listened and read it earlier than I did. It helps a lot.

I never read the manual but I do just fine. Tip don't waste your sprint when not needed. Don't go on roofs.

I would recommend at least making a once-through of the manual. Here's my one piece of advice:

Your transition into the game will likely not be smooth. Mishaps may occur on account of lack of experience. Tempers may flare when this happens. Above all, for best enjoyment of the early stages, CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS. Be as professional and courteous as you can, especially when taking responsibility for actions. As long as you do these things: if people respond with heated words, it's their problem, not yours. YOU WILL ENJOY THIS MOD. But it will require composure and thought beyond almost every FPS you've played up to this point.

Welcome, and enjoy!

my tip: dont listen to this.
im a quite experienced players (torunament, clan, 900hours play time) and i still look things up in the manual, besides its a very good point to start with. if you dont know how to play but you know the facts behind whats happening its a lot easier. in rl you get a proper introduction into a weapon before shooting the first time aswell.
roofs arent bad either. high ground is - as it is in rl - one of the most important factors in this game. you are way less exposed to targets below you, have overview and can go to cover way easier than your targets. the major disadvantages are that you are easily seen above the silhouettes of buildings and youre an easy targets for anything high up than you.

the decision if to go on the roof is the same as in every firefight:
do i get an advantage over my primary targets?
- in visual terms as in terms of cover
if i get wounded, can i be easily be revived?
where are places where i can easily be taken out from and how likely is it that there is an enemy there?

regards,
skull

Actually, as a general rule; stay away from rooftops. Let me put it this way, sometimes you might have to make a quick visit, but never ever overstay your welcome ;)

Try and position yourself on one of the topfloors instead. Much better cover and gives the medic a better chance of reviving you in a safe way.

Wrote this a while back about beeing new on PvP. Think you might have to scroll down page a bit.
