The Chinese are coming

A fair few months ago I showed the community the updated geometry of new weapons for the chinese forces, and I am delighted to say that the textures are finally done and not much work is left to finish the weapons up

The new weapons feature a large set of improvements:
1) Added a completely remade QBB95 light machinegun
2) Added a completely remade QBZ95B sub machinegun
3) Added [R-CON] Adriaan's QSZ-92 handgun
3) updated the original QBZ95 assault rifle with various details such as:
New realistic iron sights
Updated scopes
Updated details, such as a proper flash hider, real holes for barrel cooling etc. which are now geometric instead of textured
added weapon sling holding points and gas adjustment levers for the appropriate weapons

This is only the updated geometries though, which however do increase the fidelity of the rifles.
On top of the updated geometries, [R-CON]Spush (soon to be [R-DEV] at this rate) and Myself have been working hard on updating and optimizing the textures.
We realised early down the line of work that completely new textures had to be made, and that we could optimize the number of textures to be loaded extensively.
The textures therefore reflect the real material of the rifle, which in its current ingame for is metal, but in real life is actually a composite/plastic material for the main body.

And the number of textures has been decreased from some 20-25 textures in total, to 12'ish. This along with updated LODs and a better method of using these, should make the chinese a beautiful and optimized force to recon with.

BUT ENOUGH WITH THE TALK, HERE ARE THE PICTURES:

I personally see no difference when compared to the current QBZ series ingame but regardless those look awesome, very crisp and well detailed, especially the pistol.

Nice work.

Nice work by all. Looks like a big step up!

EDIT:

The old model was very low detailed and was made of metal even though the weapon is plastic ;)

This picture is not with the final texture like it is now, but a WIP texture at the time of the photo. But you get the general idea :) Take a look at the sights, both iron and scope and you can notice the difference.
The current ingame .95 version does have the updated flash hider, but only a temporary one.

Heh, some people work in the darkness to get those weapons implemented you know :P (making LODs, animations, coding...)

I'll miss the vbf2 QSZ92...(ironical)

I'll agree it looks good, but honestly to the untrained eye if you switched those around and said that the top one is the new one, everyone would still smile and nod.

If the texture still isn't done whip Spush harder, it usually works.

The pistol is a noticeable improvement. The rifles will likely need to be seen first-hand ingame to really see the differences in the models. Good work!

In terms of realism it is a noticeable improvement...

Yes, it is much more noticeable now that each weapon is shown individually and in a tighter close-up.

And how often is that done in game? How often do you go up to someone and study their weapon?

What you need to understand is this update isn't just about adding more details to the weapons and brining them up to the specs they are in real life, its also about optimization.

Currently we are using lots of different QBZs, that being a mixture of the vBF2 ones and the PR ones, with the QBZ-95 rifles being the PR ones, using high rez textures etc and the QBB + QBZ-95B both being vBF2 weapons, with there own textures. As such we had basically 3 sets of the same weapon, all using there own unique texture sheets which isn't very good for performance when you can have them all using the same textures and as a result, having to load less textures into the memory and having less draw calls to be fed though your CPU and that your GPU needs to process. Not to mention the new QBB and QBZ-95B textures being much higher rez than the vBF2 textures (but the same rez as the normal QBZ-95 textures where before). There has also been lots of other optimizations done to these weapons which in a few months time I hope to go into more detail about once they have been fully tested and somewhat implemented.
dtacs wrote:And how often is that done in game? How often do you go up to someone and study their weapon?
The fact is you don't, which is part of the other optimizations I just mentioned but this increase in detail is about the 1st person weapons, which your holding in your hands and is front of your face the whole entire time so you will easily be able to see the difference in detail very easily.

As such, this update is not only adding more details to the rifles (which you will notice when you are holding the rifles) its also very much about increasing FPS and as such, its about killing two birds with one stone.

an important update which'll probably make the chinese much more interesting to play (atm they just don't seem to be up to par when comparing them to the other factions)

also good to hear our brave comrades in the dev department are winning great victories at the front of optimization ;)
