[Vehicle] Technical overhaul: 80s Toyota Hilux

Hey guys! I absolutely LOVE technicals, as i'm sure most of us do. My only complaint is of course the vanilla-BF2 (special forces was it?) model and texture. They are painfully inferior to the level of excellence seen in the newer PR content. So, I aim to correct this.

I have a few year's experience with 3dsmax, and with several different SDK suites. I will at the very least, produce a new, UV-mapped model of an 84 or 88 Toyota Hilux, modified to match the general specs of the existing 'totally-not-a-toyoya-pickup' model. If I can make heads or tails of the BF2 Editor, ill try to get it further than that.

The Hilux is, in fact, THE combat vehicle of choice for insurgents across Afghanistan and the middle-east in general, chosen for its rugged reliability, and, I like to think, its handsome body shape. =D

Interesting article on the subject here

I am also planning on creating an 80-something Toyota 4Runner as a possible alternative to the ubiquitous Clown-cars.

At the moment, It would be helpful to have the current techie model as a reference, but I cant seem to find it in the BF2 Editor. : /

Also haven't been able to find a nice blueprint of this particular series of the Hilux, but Ive got a pretty good bank of ref pics.

It would be certainly a nice addition ;)

The current technical is located in objects/vehicles/civilian/civ_jep_technical, there are several versions.

I forgot, don't base your model tricount on the vbf2 models...they don't have our standards ;)

Great initiative mate, good luck with the project, do you have any previous works we could look at also? (PR or not PR related)

Well, Ive been in quite a long slump of modeler's block here recently, but here are a couple weapons Ive made: (I used to do a considerable amount of compiling for a Source mod called Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat)

If I knew how to use a spoiler, Id make this a little cleaner : (

M16A2/M203:

And here's my take on a Warhammer 40k Bolter:

Hehe, there is no spoiler tags to my knowledge, so no problem. :p

Models look good!

What was your nick in the dev team ? I don't see you in the team list of the mod :) :

Anyway, can't wait to see the beginning of the Hilux ;)

Oh no, I wasnt a part of the official team, I did alot of custom weapon skinning- the nature of the mod allowed for custom models and textures to be used online. =D

Heres the first WIP, done for today:

EDIT: Also, I am not seeing the civ_jep_technical listed, in fact most vehicles seem to be missing from the list. I have BF2 installed in a non-standard directory, could that be causing problems?

You will find PR's techies files in folder vehicles\civilian inside vehicles_client.zip and vehicles_server.zip.

(which should be unzipped to your work folder ie. c:\games\bf2\mods"mymod"\objects\vehicles"

Nice! I'm keen to see this on the game. I've never really like the look of the techies.

Would also be good to see the end of the clown cars, but I'm not sure how a hilux wagon would go as bomb car, just a bit over sized.
Maybe something like an old Toyota crown would work.

Good luck mate. Will watch in anticipation!

I love this idea, so much so that I started gathering ref pics. But then the thought occurred to me- bombcars rely at least partially on their indistinguishability from standard clown cars. if bombcars suddenly have unique meshes, then their survivability will drop considerably, I'd think.

At any rate, ill probably still make a 4runner conversion of the hilux just for kicks. We used to have a Suburban transport, at least on Fallujah, iirc :D
