Learn foreign language with PR?

The fastest way to learn a language is to be forced to use it in a conversation.
If you play PR 1-2 hours per day, you could spend up to an hour a day in a conversation on a foreign language. That's a lot of hours, more than you get from joining the fastest language learning course that you would have to pay a lot for.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could come up with a simple program that would give people a chance to learn other languages, while playing the game?

This is what I had in mind, as the first step. We start by making a list of simple phrases that are used in game, and then translate them into many languages. Let's say, the guy from Russia wants to learn German. He's not welcome in the German squad, cos he don't understand a single word of German. But if he could understand few words so that he can move, or do most of the things, he could be of some use to the SL.

Simple phrases (this is just the example of what I'm talking about):

I understand.
I don't understand.
North, west, east, south.
To north, to north-west, to south-east.
I need healing.
I need ammo.
I need help.
Do you need healing, do you need ammo, do you need help?

Where is the enemy?
I see enemies.
Enemies in front. Enemy infantry in front of us.
One enemy on the left.
One enemy right.
Two enemies behind us.
Enemy tank incoming.
Helicopter is landing.
Enemy vehicle moving to the bridge.
Enemy squad moving to our left.
Few enemies entering the building.
Enemy close!

Move
Stop
Fall back
Defend here
Cover left/right

What I'm trying to stress out, is, it doesn't take effort to be able to communicate on a basic level, to be able to follow simple orders, give people ammo, spot for enemies... It's about 2 pages of scripted text that you need to remember, and that's all you need for the start.

Afterwards, you can build your vocabulary day by day, and come up with more advanced phrases, and finally communicate completely in a foreign language.

I'll try it, even if it doesn't work. It will be a reason to let my parent let me play more PR.

Hmm... You learn foreign languages in PR?

And when you go to real-life, and you go to speak someone with that language, you are gonna say "Hi, I don't understand!" and then "Oh okay, enemy spotted North move!". Followed by chick leaving...

I learned a few russian words, though...

Spaciba - Thank you!
Shashkaaaaa - Smoke!
Uraahhhhhhhhhhh! - Go!!

:)

Lol, learning with PR is fun.

So, I support this idea, but I think that players won't like much in general. They want to play and have fun, not study a new language.

I'd be well up for this when my exams are over in May.

Was in a squad with a guy called NorwayPartyWanker, quite sure I'd played with him before. He was talking perfect English, then one guy in the squad turned out to be spanish and could not understand. Without hesitation, Norway started speaking Spanish!!!!

My language skills are ****, can't even speak my native language, Welsh!

I actually just took a chinese class. So I can actually understand most of what the PLA says. But that's one way of doing it. Part of how I picked up on some Russian/German words. In other games that is.

One of our Polish teammates once joined our (Hungarian) TS channel while we were playing PR. The first Hungarian word he learned was "zsid?" (=jew), followed by "baszd meg" (=fuck) and its variations. Need to say more?

I understand your confusion, the arabic waw can mean both an o as an u in certain arabic dialects but in this specific case it really is "shukran".

It would be interesting to find out which dialect the MEC are speaking, but I'm afraid they're speaking modern standard arabic :p
