New Custom PC, need a little advice

Post by kuro570 »

Recently went to newegg.com and purchased all these components already. Mainly everything had to fit within a $700 budget (including shipping fees).

Case- Raidmax Altas Gaming Case - Black
CPU- AMD Phenom II X4 840 Quad-Core CPU (Fan and heatsink)
RAM- 4 GB [2 GB X2] DDR3-1333 brand Corsair
GPU- ATI Radeon HD 5770 - 1GB - HIS IceQ 5 Turbo - Core: 875MHz
Mobo- Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3 -- AMD 770
PS- Rosewill RV2-600 600 W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V SLI Ready Power Supply
HDD- Seagate 1 TB HARD DRIVE -- 16M Cache, 7200 RPM, 3.0Gb/s
24X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD?R/?RW + CD-R/RW Drive
OS- Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Monitor- 22" LCD 1680x1050 -- Sceptre X220T-Naga

I'm aim with this is to make a pc that could play most current games in high settings smoothly or even play PR without stutter with medium to high settings.

My current system on the way out the door is..

Case- NZXT Apollo Case - Black
CPU- AMD 64x2 3800+
RAM- 4 GB of OCZ DDR2 800
GPU- Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTS by gigabyte
Mobo- forgot, i know its a Gigabyte GA something
PS- nameless 500 watt power supply
HDD- 2 150GB Western digital
24X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD?R/?RW + CD-R/RW Drive
OS- Windows XP Professional 32 bit
Monitor- 24'' Hitachi CM716 (CRT monitor)

Seems like a pretty good setup to me. I would recommend a 750 wat psu I think you will be ok with 600 (dont quote me on this). I would dubble check your ATI 5770 to see minimum specs. Also if you do get a bigger PSU you wont need a new one in your next build ;) saving money down the line.

Also what do you plan on doing with your old system?

Thanks, originally I planned take the two hard drives and add it to my new build so I would have another 300 GB for storage and just keep it as a backup for just in case anything happens to my current system. Other than that I can't make up my mind.

As for the PSU, I definitely could have gave it more thought, I just thought 600 watts, decent reviews, I'll buy it. lol Tbh I don't know too much about PSU and understand about the rails and such. ><

600W is plenty for a single GPU setup should be able to run pr at at least medium. To save money (and probably spend it on a better GPU, as that will esure you can run more games on higher settings for longer) think about using the same case?

The only reasons not to use the same case is if your in the same situation as me.. Which is my current case is a BTX set up case and nobody makes BTX motherboards anymore =[(much better cooling design, but never caught on...)

I have to see if I can return some some items, I think I can get more for a bit more. If I keep the same case I already have and get an OEM windows 7 premium home 64 bit, I could actually save about $200 and put that towards a AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Thuban 3.3GHz, 3.7GHz, and a HIS IceQ X Turbo Radeon HD 6870 1GB. I should have definitely asked before placing my order. I also found another roswell 750 for about $90.99 that is modular which my 600 PSU isn't.

Install 64bit WIN7 unless you have a compelling reason to do 32bit.

Making a few partitions in the TB HDD should give you plenty of storage space.
Best line yet...

Have a quick look at my pc specs in my profile; I'm running it all on a 600W Corsair TX PSU.

Also, if your completely upgrading your pc, I have to order you to get the new Intel I5-2500K. It is ?150, and you can overclock it to 4.5GHz easily. It's a no-brainer.

witty_pseudonym wrote:Your power supply would be fine and you will easily be able to play PR with everything on High, 4x AA with your original setup. The 5770 is not too far off a 260, the processor is pretty much irrelevant to PR if it's anything newer than a Pentium D. If you play newer games, many of them run even smoother.

I play PR with everything on high with these specs:

Antec 300
Antec Trio 650W
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
i7 920 2.66GHz
3x2GB Kingston DDR3 1600MHz
EVGA GTX 260 Core 216SC 896MB
WD 1TB 7200
LG 22X DVDRW
Windows 7 Ultimate 64
Logitech G5 mouse
Logitech Attack 3 joystick
Logitech G110 keyboard
Logitech G330 headset
dust bunnies
lots of fans

I even shot a guy once.

I might even SLI the 260 and see what happens. My HD is poop but I still load faster than most servers.

I also have a Pentium D machine with a 9800 gt, 350w ps, and it runs on medium/high fine, about 40-60 fps minimum.
With my 7800GTS I haven't been able play PR on high at all without tons of stutter.

Thanks for all the help guys, I've finally settled on and built my new pc. I made some changes with pricing in mind and estimated performance. My finished built setup is

Case: NZXT Apollo
CPU: AMD Phenom x6 1090T 3.2GHz, 3.7 Turbo (black edition)
Mobo: Gigabyte 870A UD3 rev 3.1 (AM3+ compatible)
GPU: XFX HD Radeon 6870 1GB
RAM: G skill 4 GB (2x2)
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 750 watt
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

So far I've played shogun II and it runs like a champ on highest settings. ^.^
