It goes 5 meters infront of you and falls from the sky until it hits the ground where, if it's flat, it deploys I believe?

Try going prone, sometimes that helps. Also looking up can help aswell.

DONT GET HIT BY THE DEPLOYING OBJECTS

. . .. . Stand behind an object suchas a Tree or a Barrel/box basket anything solid ( Doorways work great ) and place it looking Just past the object ( if you are in a tightly spaced area )

10m for insurgent deployables 5m for others.
If you're deploying low it can help to crouch or prone.
Like all types of SL markers you have to be FACING THE RIGHT WAY NOT JUST LOOKING, a quick tap on back or forward when you're looking the right way's enough.

I've heard that the build marker "forces" deployables down on it, so theoretically you can place them more precisely.
About fobs. In AAS try to deploy them just outside flag caprange so that it doesn't get overruned and destroyed by enemy who is capping the flag, also the location should be away of typical infantry movement paths for obvious reasons. If you want to build it inside caprange or in the middle of flag, than hide it really well, if not it will get destroyed or overrun (not destroyed, but can't spawn) really soon.
Another thing is that if you have intentions of building a "fob with assets" for defensive purposes, than you can build it almost everywhere because you'll defend it using the deployed assets. Be sure to deploy this fob in a location where the deployable assets could be used effectively, for example, deploy HMG's where there's a lot of space to cover (like fields and rooftops), also this can be related to TOW's, but not always (In Muttrah I deploy them to cover a long street). Deploy Anti-Air in a place with lot of space around, like a roof, clearing, field, large street with buildings far from it - the fired rockets tend to hit obstacles like trees and other statics. TOW/HMG can be used in all angles (down/up/left/right), so you can build them a top of something like on a hill or on a building.
Try to build assets as far away from your fob and as spread out as possible, because they tend to get hit by airstrikes, mortars and other area large are attacks, also the pesky enemy infantry can miss a well hidden fob that's not near the assets that are deployed in it's territorry.
It's almost the same in Insurgency.
Remember, if you have no intentions of defending the fob, just build it in a remote, hidden location, and as soon as it's done GTFO because you'll attract unwanted attention. If enemy gets intel on your fob, It just a matter of time until it gets hit.
Ugh, I've must have forgotten something. But for the moment this is all.

Don't look up! Or it'll just crush you.
I think the way it works (a dev or w/e may correct me please) is:
You look at the desired location. This place is now marked for the object.
An invisible variant of the object drops from the sky. If there is any solid objects in the way, it de-spawns. If not, it crushes everything else (including friendly units =p) and then slides along the terrain. It then checks how far from the desired location it is. If it's too far away, it'll despawn. If it is still at the desired location (for example because the desired location was flat and it didn't slide away, or the desired location was not too steep and it didn't slide too far) and nothing was in the way (apart from the things it crushed), then it spawns a visible variant of itself, collapses, and has someone dig it up again. Until someone destroys it and it collapses again... You know that part.
So, technically, you want to make sure the exact location to look at is as flat as possible. If there is no flat place, look at a place that'd make the FOB not slide away too far (some people aim for small ditches in the ground: the object will settle in the middle of the ditch; if you aimed at the middle, it'll be close to the desired location and thus spawn). Also, make sure there's no static objects, no matter how small, in the way of the FOB, or it'll collide with them and thus, despawn.
If that's not how it works, tell me how, for understanding the mechanic behind it is the most important step to learning how to do it right, I suppose.

From my experience this is the way i've done it. Put observe marker on a area with little or no obstructions around. Walk back until 5m away. Deploy, wait for the blip and "deploying asset" on the HUD. afterwards, Still looking at the marker, walk backwards until it deploys. Also make sure to warn everybody nearby.

I can't really offer advice on this, as meany of my squad members can attest..

hopefully a lil something is put in the next patch so we know where it will fall and when its coming so it stops killing people that try to set it up which is quite angering.

Before trying any of the before-posted tips, DEPLOY A RALLY POINT!! Has "saved" my life once!
When you actually make it and deploy the FOB, or Rally Point will be quickly rearmed. No harms done!

I agree, Sneak Attack.
When the FOB is being deployed it would be nice if it descended slowly with a holy light like the 2nd coming of Christ. If that's not enough to alert the surroundings, then perhaps the holy grenade chant from Worms should go along.

And what ever you do: Dont put them out in the open
AND AND: Move around after you clicked deploy. Just run away from the area incase the static decides to deploy on you. Never stand still after deploying something.

Planted a FOB on my head last night (sighs).
Looked funny from underneath though when Ploddit airlifted me in:

Assets can be deployed 200m away from a FOB. It is a good idea to move these away, to not give away the FOB's position.
Mortars are deployed 50m away from FOB.

That is a great picture.
It reminds you of just how wide the base of assets are.
That whole structure drops invisible to the ground and WILL bounce up to 20m from your intended drop location.
It is the SL's responsibility to make sure the area is clear before dropping the asset.
Assets don't like hills so try to aim across the slope at a point equal to your own to drop on uneven ground.
This gets tricky with the .50 as they do not have a 360 arc but you can jump up on walls and things to get that "level" point and that will often give the .50 a chance to look over walls, like on the roof of a Muttrah building.
Remember that if you are planning to drop assets the range is 200m from the FOB
and the crates, so plan ahead.
If you drop the crates, walk 30m then drop the FOB, in that direction your assets are now limited to 170m from the FOB.
You can drop more crates to maximize your asset deployment range.
When using crates for mortars, the closer together they are the faster the ammo bearer will reload.
But anyplace else you want at least 2m distance between the crates so 1 incendiary grenade cannot take both out.
If you know the assets will all be dug nearby, it is a good idea to hide that second crate because sometimes the enemy is in a hurry or low on ammo and you can simply rebuild your base after he has passed if you have one crate left.
Assets decay so don't drop them too far ahead of the shovels or you increase the dig time, as well if an asset has been destroyed to the base, it is faster to burn it completely and drop a new one than rebuild the damaged asset and it will be fully loaded with ammo.
