What 8km map?

If you read in the Features section it says that Project Reality has 8km maps (64km).

Which map is that?

Maps - Project Reality comes with 28 unique maps, based off of realworld geographical locations and imagery, and include custom statics. No vanilla BF2 maps are retained within Project Reality. To give an estimation of the size that some of Project Reality's maps include, vanilla BF2 maps are scaled as 2km squared (4km area). Most of Project Reality's maps are 4km squared (16km area), and some are 8km squared (64km area). This, along with less system intensive statics have allowed the team to improve the view distance to more realistic proportions and greatly improve the realism of combat within the mod. More persistant foliage statics ensures that cover actually means cover!

There is no map at this time which is 8x8km, however there are several 4x4km maps.

we do have them, however they might require higher system specs, also they don't have as much detail in terms of landscape, also it was because of the lack of players and 8x8 KM map would drain the plaers, however with 128 player servers we might be able to make/use them them in future ver's of the mod.

Actually a 8km map is four times bigger, than a 4km map, so in theory you would need 256 players on one map to have the same density. Just say'n.

That would be some MMOFPS :D

What are the current limitations on player numbers? The server's hardware?

No the engine and server hardware. I don't think we could exceed 128 players without it becomming stupidly expensive for clans etc. to rent or host servers.

yeah 8K maps would only be good for Jet operations . . . and basicaly JET TRAINING . .. Jet combat training . . it would be way to big for the amount of players even with 128 players its not worth the server crashes

Rhino explained previously that anything bigger than 4x4 does not render terrain textures properly, so it could only be used as big naval battle (terrain sunken under water, so the texture doesnt matter) or as a air space for jets.

Then why does it say that in the features?

I made a thread last year about it which got some detailed responses: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f10-pr-bf2-general-discussion/72985-map-sizes-re-features-page-seethed-waters.html
[R-DEV]Sniperdog wrote:I believe they are considering one in game meter to be 2 meters (dont know why really; maybe to reflect what the distance actually feels like) so what they say in the pr features page:

would best translate to:

To give an estimation of the size that some of Project Reality's maps include, vanilla BF2 maps are scaled as 1km squared (1km area). Most of Project Reality's maps are 2km squared (4km area), and some are 4km squared (16km area).

in "in game units".

In the units they are using Seethed would actually be 16*16 km or 256 kilometers squared O.O
That may explain why it says 8x8km on the features page, still should say 4x4km like it's normally scaled though to prevent confusion. I get the impression some parts of the website are rarely updated, for example the last screenshots on the media section are from 0.87.

There you go, it is possible to accomplish one by making a few islands in a vast sea.

We just need more boats.
