I'm a sucker for realism & severely for good looking animations, and Project Reality has both, but the G36A1 has a reload that's bugging me. The cocking handle doesn't lock back when the last shell ejects. I noticed it doesn't with pistols either, but I love the G36A1. I love how the magazine even appears empty when you reload, despite it being a mid magazine reload. The G36A1 is so near perfection it's not even funny anymore...

Despite this one complaint, keep up the amazing work.

Because that's not possible on the engine I would assume? Wouldn't the frame also lock back on pistols when all rounds are expended?
If Chuc hasn't done it, its most likely that he can't.

Other weapons like the SKS, pistols (as dtacs mentioned), M16 rifle series, QBZ95 and probably a whole lot others have some visual sign that the last round has been fired and the chamber is empty.
Alas we can't have 2 different reload animations playing based on context.

The SKS already has the slide catch to the rear after the last round.
Would it be possible to create new animations for these weapons then? I presume some sort of interior modelling for the pistols would have to be done.

The SKS's last round catch is part of the reload animation, and coupled with it being unable to reload until all rounds are expended, it feels convincing enough.
It's not my job anymore, so it's anyone's game

Speaking of which, why don't you make the SKS be able to reload while there's still rounds in the magazine?

Because then the animation would look wrong, I assume.
(A realism > gameplay decision? Maybe.)

I noticed it with the pistols. But I ignored those because that's the way it was with BF2, and I didn't know if there was something with the engine that didn't allow you to do that, or something weird like that... despite a reload being done by animation...
But with the M4, AK, and many other weapons, the animation reacts to reloading based upon the weapon being dry, completely out of ammo, EXCEPT the G36, and that being one of my most favorite weapons, I just wished there was that single hint of authenticity because major IPs like Call of Duty, that usually have authentic reloads (or semi-authentic) even left out that MINOR detail.

Hmm, maybe lower the SKS just so the bottom is out of the screen as the guy opens the magazine from below, quickly closes it, then pull the charging handle and lock the bolt back, then play the current reload animation (clip in, slide bullets in, remove clip, pull handle)?

There is a thread about the SKS somewhere in this regard.

Almost every weapon's bolt goes back the rounds are gone. I've shot an AK, and hell, it IT goes back.

don't even get started on call of dutys reload animations, no one can reload that fast consistently, and with the M4A1 and ACR animations in MW2 it solely consists of the character inserting a new mag in the mag well even when the you've only fired 3-5 rounds. i can't say for sure but i asume the soldiers in PR throw their empty mags into there invisible dump pouches especially when not all the rounds are fired.
also the pistol animations in PR would account for the consistent number rounds in the mag, after the empty reload the slide is cycled placing a round in the chamber, in a mid mag reload the slide is cycled ejecting the currently chamber round, loading another, thus you have the same number of rounds as after an empty reload.
plus i know some guys from the army and other civilian shooters who have disabled the slide stop so that they have to rack the slide every time, i don't why but they like it for some reason.
