I am new to this mod but I've played BF2 for the last 4 years. Is it necessary for a mic?

Yes, this is the one game that i've played where it is 100% crucial to have a mic in order to be able to play well.

Nope..I myself never used one.If everyone in your SQ has one and your SL can read you will be fine.Although a mic makes things better.
That being said if you have the option to use one than do.

You don't necessarily have to, but you'll be outcasted more often than not. The very least over 90% of the fanbase use mics and it's far more efficient than typing enemy sightings and stuff. Trust me, it's a good investment.

Do you have to?
No.
Are you going to get to experience the mod to its full potential without one?
No.
Should you seriously consider getting a mic if you want to play this mod?
Yes.

Well, I played without a mic for like a year...Now I realized how much more fun it is with a mic, so Imma say you should get one, or stick with CoOp...

Communication is crucial in PR. A keyboard works, but a mic is safer. You can fire while talking for example.

for most squad leaders(or at least me), they dont need you to speak, they simply need you to understand.
but if you can afford one, its definatly worth the money. even a $10 walmart headset will do wonders.

Oh, I'd disagree. I'm not squad leading often, but I really dislike it when I have the feeling that I'm not absolutely up-to-date with everything my squad members see, do or need. I only really get the feeling of control and situational awareness if I get constant input from everybody in the squad. I'm sure many other squad leaders would agree - and at the end of the day, there's many roles that really, absolutely require a mic, and that the OP might want to play, too. Medic for instance. "Where did you go down?" "Uh, near the corner of the southern building." "Okay, I'll look for you... There's two corpses here." "Yeah, the other one is dead-dead, only revive me." "Is this you? Can you see me?" "Hm? No." "Okay, this you then?" "Yeah, that's me." "Alright. Okay got you up. Wait, taking fire, follow me, asap!" "Which way?" "East! Move it!" "Ah, see you now. Damn black vision. Okay, I'm in cover, heal me!" "On it".
Imagine that without mics =p
Unless you absolutely cannot speak English, there's really no reason not to go with a mic.
