I'm not sure what's happening, but randomly during play my Main Menu seems to open up without me pressing [ESC]. I thought maybe I had accidentally bound one of my commonly used keys to open it as a secondary function, but went and checked the keymap and everything was fine. For good measure, I reset all keys to default and I'm still getting the same problem intermittently. I use XFire\, Mumble/Vent/TS (depending on the server), but have disabled them to see if the problem still happens, and (obviously) I'm no closer to solving the mystery.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Does that only happen by any chances at the beginning of maps/you have just joined in the last few minutes?

If so, same here... Not a real issue though.

Unfortunately, no. It happens throughout the match and keeps me from taking up any semi-important team role because I never know when the menu is going to pop up and immobilize me for a few precious seconds. :/

They don't call it Project REALITY for nothing.

It shouldn't open itself up randomly. Either you hit the ESC by accident (for example if you try to close the map, or the squad selection) or you "someone" is pressing it for you. In this case i would suggest you to check your pc for any kind of malware.

I know this is annoying, but I think a re-installation must fix this!

I am also getting this problem; the main menu will randomly appear during gameplay, and I have to repeatedly press ESC to get back in-game. I am definitely NOT pressing ESC myself.

If you test it and it works then great, if it doesn't then continue with the steps.

1. Scan for viruses.
1a. Test it

2. Delete the contents of the cache folder, located: My Documents > Battlefield 2 > Cache

3. Reset all your controls in the options menu in both PR and vBF2 just to be sure.
3a. Test it

4. Close all open programs including rainmeter etc.
4a. Test it

5. Test if it happens in co-op or not

6. Test to see if changing your keyboard does anything?

7. Test to see if the same problem happens in vBF2
7a. If yes then make a back-up copy of PR and re-sintall/repair BF2 using your CD, if this deletes PR for some reason then copy PR back over.
7b. If no then you must re-install PR.

If your problem continues then un-install BF2 and delete all folders to do with it, but make a copy of the profiles folder located:
My Documents > Battlefield 2

Now follow this guide: Link

Once you have followed the guide copy your profiles folder back over from where you found it My Documents > Battlefield 2 and that will give you all your profiles back, if you don't see them straight away in game, you will have to click on manage in the logon screen and find something that says recover profiles and do what makes sense (havn't needed to do it in ages!).

Thanks for the well-wishes, I'm loving PR and want to take on more responsibilities and complex roles, but this is really holding me back.

I've done the first 4 steps with no change. Swapping out my keyboard soon. Will report back.

okay, but before re-sintalling or anything just wait a day or two and see if you get anymore responses on here, someone might have the solution.

This. Start speaking in terms of effects that most of your subordinates don't properly understand, disappear at important times, give slightly vague and unclear instructions on topics you don't properly understand. If anyone tries to seek clarification or the team fails to achieve something that you didn't consider, berate them for lack of initiative.

Most importantly, frequently go to the wrong section of the map.
