Logitech Z-2300 by far the best 2.1 out there, about $150ish. if you get decent headphones you will get way better surround sound effect but if 2.1 are a must the Z-2300 are easily the best for the price.

Well, I had an issues, I got some Eagle Tech Arions. Sound Stage, 2.1.
Great amount of bass, and it is REALLY REALLY loud. I spent 100 Canadian for everything, including shipping.
Defiantly worth all the money.

Do you need the sub? In my experience it's hard to find good sound with these "kits" in these price ranges, so I personally prefer getting 2 decent stereo speakers for that price and then maybe complimenting with a sub later down the line if needed. Like
these(Swedish site) maybe.
But then again I'm borderline audiophile

- can't stand the plastic sound of small cheap speakers. Some are not as sensitive.
But whatever you choose, find a physical store that sells them and have a listen and see if it fits your requirements. Online reviews and such are not always reliable.

For 226 Euro you could get a 7.1 receiver/amp and 7 speakers with a subwoofer on eBay (used, but these things are VERY well built and inevitably hardly used).
Then all you need is some wire to connect the speakers and some wall-mounts to make them look really 'pro'. And you have a home cinema experience and can listen to your music in full clarity etc.
Some DIY skills required to make it look as good as it could be.. But hell it's worth it.
I spent 120 GBP on my setup, and it's far better than if i'd just bought some overpriced tacky Logitech speakers brand new (unless Logitech do 3-way speakers in cherry veneer and supply them with a home cinema receiver).
Edit: Oh also, if you have a large charity warehouse nearby go and take a look at the AV equipment. Yesterday we got a set of 5 'cube' speakers made by Philips that are silver to match our TV and only a few inches accross so we can put them almost anywhere. The living room now has surround sound, price? 5 GBP.
