How to Use Anti-Air Weapons

Hey, I've played PR for quite some time but I just can't get the hang of using the anti-aircraft weapons. If someone could give me some pointers on how to get successful takedowns, that'd be great.

Aim at the chopper with your AA and wait for the clear lock-on tone. When you get the clear lock-on tone, quickly aim a bit in front (it's like "leading" with .50cal when firing at fast moving objects) of the direction it's heading and fire. Seems like the first 100 meters the AA rocket flies in a relatively straight line and only after that it starts to follow the choppers heat source. It's much easier to hit choppers that are flying away from you or at you, not the ones that are flying past by you; for obvious reasons.

With the AA-kits that you can request from crates, I usually just hipfire them while having whatever youre trying to shoot at in the middle of your screen. Usually it hits, sometimes it doesnt, but I find that it actually has a better chance of doing some damage than if you would actually ADS, wait for lock and then fire. Doesnt matter which way they are going, it will more often than not do some damage, but most choppers wont go down even if you hit them straight in the face with. They're best used against Kiowas(and other small helicopters), and the Cobra/Havok/Apache.

the missle will always hit the target in a range of less than 50m. ALWAYS.

you dont need a lock to hit. Did it on a blackhawk yesterday.

There is a delay between the time you hear the lock tone and the time the pilot hears it.
.5 sec I'm told but I can't swear to it.
When in emplaced AA, it is best to NOT lock the target until he is within 500m and fire IMMEDIATELY upon getting the lock.
If the travel time for your missiles is <.5sec you will hit him with both missiles.
If it is greater then he will be able to deploy flares, which seriously lower the chance of a double hit and a single rarely kills.
AA is often useful simply for it's presence rather than the KDR of the gunner.
If helos get toned they tend to avoid that area until the AA is located and neutralized.
On smaller maps like Muttrah and Jabal that severly limits the access of the helos and makes it easier for other forces to intercept and kill them.
It is also a great place to eat lunch since you only need 1 hand to operate the weapon.

Ha, best tip ever :p

To pick up on what L4gi was saying I've seen the no scoping with the handheld AA be very effective at times.

I like to try and shoot at the heli when its travelling away from me, I find its more likely to move away from its flare deployment when that is the case.

However the best tactic is actually to work with 1-2 other AA positions and get the guy to drop all his flares.

Scout & attack helicopters will usually go down with only 1 hit. If they survive a hit, most of the time they'll lose power and land/crash on the way back to get repairs.

Other helicopters take more hits. But, there are times you can disable the bigger helicopters with just one hit. For example, if the black hawk is doing gun runs, wait until it is directly over you and fire one into it's belly. I've taken down a few black hawks using this method. I think it requires a direct hit.

Some tips on AA:

-AA can be fired while prone

-When requesting the AA kit as Taliban, right click instead of left to get the US made Stinger. It's superior to the Russian SA7, the only downside is the ugly scope picture that blocks a lot of your screen.

-Always keep the launcher prepped and ready to fire, it takes very little time to pull out your rifle should you come into contact with infantry, but it takes a long *** time to ready the AA launchers, usually more time than it takes the helicopter to fly by.

-Ensure you have a source of ammo at hand, AA works best in quantity. You'd be amazed how many times a helicopter will remain in the area after taking a hit, I guess the pilot figures your not going to reload and fire another missile any time soon, his mistake.

-The missile just needs to get close to the aircraft to hurt it. Like others have said, firing from the hip works great on maps like Kokan where the Kiowa is just overhead. By the time you lock on, the Kiowa could be gone already, so firing from the hip the instant you see the Kiowa works wonders.

-AA kills caches. It only takes about 2 hits near the cache for AA to blow it up. So keep that in mind when defending a cache and try to keep the missiles flying away from the cache.

-Stay alive. Since you can fire AA from prone I've taken to hiding on rooftops that have walls. This allows you to avoid long range fire while still being able to pop up and help the guys around you. Use your ears, check your map, etc, etc. A dead guy holding the AA kit hurts the whole team. I've been killed holding the AA before and as soon as I go down the aircraft come in and wipe out the rest of your team. Some pilots are paranoid, they'll sit and wait for infantry to clear out the AA threat before they attack. So keep that in mind and don't give your position away. After a while the infantry will report the area is clear and the pilot will fly into your kill zone.

lead the aircraft slightly but try to keep it within the center ring on your sight.

This is pretty much all good advice, I would also add - you don't have to even fire to be effective AA. The lock-on tone will scare pilots away. If they get wise to your tactic and stop flaring or avoiding the area, an easy kill for you!

Are you sure about this? I thought all heavy equipment were equal, western or soviet/russian..

I've had success with this one too.
Also for servers that have an idle kick, jump off and on stationary AA once in a while. Incoming chopper - got tone got tone fir..... "Guardian[]B()b kicked for being idle" Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I checked out the files and found some differences...

Stinger:
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionRadius 60
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionDamage 850
ObjectTemplate.seek.maxDistLock 850
ObjectTemplate.acceleration 380
ObjectTemplate.maxSpeed 700

SA7:
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionRadius 45
ObjectTemplate.detonation.explosionDamage 500
ObjectTemplate.seek.maxDistLock 700
ObjectTemplate.acceleration 200
ObjectTemplate.maxSpeed 430

Heh, so the Stinger is better in every way, lol. Western armies ftw.

Bigger and more powerful splash damage, locks farther away and the missile accelerates faster up to a higher top speed. Nice.

100% positive. Alternative AA-kit for Talis is the Stinger.

I can also verify that.

And its believed in some circles that holding your fire button helps the missile remain locked to target at further distances, provided flares dont change the missile path.

When there is cobra/havoc on the map. I like to have AA, but I don't fire it unless I have plenty of ammo near me. When they hear the lock tone they go away, if they come back and hear it again, they usually stay away (unless they get a lase, but then you're dead anyway).
