SECUROM in 1.5 patch

Post by wuschel »

Hello,

I somehow did not find the right category to post in, that is why this posting ended up in General Discussion.

Can someone verify the fact that the latest 1.5 patch is going to have updated DRM measures, especially the trojan horse type copy protection software SECUROM?

I am somehow angered by the fact that DICE/EA does sell this kind of upgrade as "feature" that allows us to have the CD/DVD outside the drive while playing. The CD never disturbed me, what I find annoying is all type of DRM software that messes with Your systems internals.

I understand the necessity of a solution like punkbuster, but what benefits does SECUROM bring us players?

regards,

DRM has always been on Battlefield.
SafeDisc, SecuROM and PACE depending on which version of each game you have.
DRM doesnt have to be as punishing as it was with Spore. Battlefield doesnt do limited installs. It does protect the exe files though.
What we are looking at doing for Battlefield is removing the requirement for the DVD to be in the drive during boot up. Whether we can get this going is what we are checking. It won't limit your installs on other machines or limit how many times you can install though

Would a protected exe mean we can't use the high memory fix?

Shame EA can't be like Egosoft and strip all DRM from the game after a certain patch (when the game is old).

SECUROM has nothing to do with the end user. You under stand why these are added to game in the first place right?

SecuROM is a CD/DVD copy protection product
At its simplest level that's what is for. Its to protect against fakes and has nothing to do with the end user (YOU). Now discussion of if it works or not goes WAY beyond BF2.

Hi Redfox,

I am aware what SECUROM is for. That said, my question was intending to point a finger at the fact that DICE/EA are introducing another piece of software into the players's operating system Kernel. We all had our fun with punkbuster, and now there comes its big brother from the disk protection section.

I see the use of punkbuster and its strategy of beeing intergrated into the system to benefit the players. But one does not have to be a computer engenieer or programmer by profession to understand that software can make a mess in Your operating system, not mentioning here that I am installing another rootkit here. If this software would only do things to BF2, it would be half as bad as it is..

So, double the security [apps], double the problems?

DICE guys can't spell for shit.

That just shows how dumb they are for putting securom in the first place!

There is no point to SECUROM, EA just wants more money. It doesn't stop people from pirating a game, it makes people pirate more. You buy your game, you end up installing it a couple of times maybe because you computer problems or something like that, then when you need to install it again you find you can't and you have to buy it again.

I think some of you need to calm down. EA is updating the Securom that was included with the game (Since launch 2005) to allow us to play without our CD/DVD's. I really don't understand why some of you are getting angry. This is a good thing.

As far as I can tell SECUROM is added to punish legitimate users who actually purchase the game.

Are there any key generators out that can produce a key for online play that is not in use 100fold ? If not I do not get why they felt the need to include securecom in the first place. That they allow users to play without the miniimage (because thats what most do by now) is a good thing.
