Novint Falcon and Project Reality

Post by ChiefRyza »

Hey everyone, I realize at the moment that the Battlefield 2 1.5 patch is the last thing on most PR player's minds (as is the same for me) , but I have been recently reading about the Novint Falcon and it's effects in BF2. In future, what sort of possibilities would this open up with Project Reality? I am aware it would be difficult at the moment to pin down it's effects but I am curious seeing as you can feel the direction of a bullet impact and many other features within BF2.

I have been thinking of getting one, but hopefully some DEV's who have been at work on compatibility with PR and the 1.5 patch can maybe give some clues as to how this controller would transfer over to a game/mod where there are much more variables available; for example, the intensity of a bomb blast or a tank shell hitting nearby. If this is classified information then very well....but I am intrigued, as this could possibly add a new depth of realism to PR and perhaps brand new engine features that may have been tweaked to allow for the Novint's abilities.

Its a mod for the game. You can't have this and regular players playing. Fr as I can tell at least I can't even fit it on my desK! I can't even put my joystick on my desk!

as much as we care about just you.. you got to realize it's about more than just you...

:| maybe this guy wants one and thinks there should be some kind of support... i mean if it's there, and people want to add to the immersion, why not?

=) Would be a great thing to add around V1.0 possibly (btw, i think the dev team should wait a while for V1.0 to make it AMAZING. like.. take a YEAR... only posting little mini-patches for .95... > >)

NOVINT
Look at things like HL, and Crysis, it's a mod. Unless they have the mods made that you can integrate it into a game without messing with people who don't have this particular item, how are you going to put it in? Add to that how many people are actually going to want to get this thing? I mean look at it it's bloody huge!

What are you talking about Delta? The Novint has been given support in the 1.5 Beta patch, and it might stuff some things up now but it is a BETA. Nobody is asking anyone to buy it, the controller is purely immersive and if somebody wants to get it, they will. Plus, it replaces the joystick and the mouse at the same time.
I'm simply asking whether or not Project Reality might benefit from its technology, because I do not and will not play Vanilla ever again.

exactly. If you didn't realize Delta, 1.5 is adding support for Novint... so the game WILL support it... =/ If the Novint does do recoil, i would assume that the PR mod team would have to adjust the recoil and other variables as such =/

You can adjust recoil yourself in the software that comes with the Falcon.

I don't think you understand, In-game events that react differently with the Novint and are supported by it in Project Reality is what I'm talking about. Obviously your not going to be able to set recoil and force-feedback settings for a jet flying over, a tank rolling by and everything in between. What I am wondering is if there are options within the coding of 1.5 to adjust differently for Project Reality as opposed to their default configurations in Battlefield 2.

=) yes but i meant the reactions... wouldn't those have to be scripted? Like how it recoils... > > I would assume that not all guns have the same feel to their recoil (not just in strength, but in how it reacts... So that would probably require some kind of scripting)

If that were so, then it looks like there's gonna be a whole new slew of variables to toy with..

First someone on the team has to get one of them Falcons :P

IMAO that controller looks awful for vBF and PR yes more realistic but sooo much harder to play effectively i think.
I think that DICE/EA have used the novint 'sponsorship' to finance the 1.5 patch, but sadly for novint it would make gameplay so much harder that no one in VBF will use it!
I am far more interested in the track IR device enabling the player to seperate head movements from mouse movements.

Just my opinion guys

Too bad they couldn't put in some support for TrackIR too while they were at it.

I would have thought it would have been done off the current expulsion force, recoil etc commands already in weapon code and the tweaks to the engine just make this device work of them?

Unless certain things happen, the menu won't have the options to change the control config, you'd have to do that in vBF2.
