I u took that approach to everything in the game u could say that a wounded solider shouldnt be allowed back into the game apaches should be able to look and lock targets on there own and so on and so on

it seems perfectly realistic to me, isn't it a requirement that you can climb a rope with full gear before you graduate training for the Royal Marines? i recall seeing this somewhere.

ans aswell if not a rope, it can also represent ladders, getting aboost from a friend, or just jumping, grabbing the edge of the wall and climbing over. (the last one of which is a requirement for almost any military outfit, for basic training no?)

oh the day you can blast a man sized hole in any wall within PR, then think about removing the ropes, but even then it's a valid metaphor for climbing a wall still.

I've been thinking for a while and I think I would want the grappling hooks removed...I think it brings a part of BF2v that doesn't belong in PR like the the zip line.

The unrealistic part is that soldiers with 70lbs of gear on, climbing ropes, just doesn't make sense to me. I don't know if the Dev's meant it to simulate something else but IMO I don't think it belongs in PR.

On the other hand though, it does crate some interesting strategies during game play, although unrealistic but fun.

So what say the community?

edit: couldn't add more poll options...so if your thinking its a metaphor for whatever, then i would go w/ option 3

edit2: and if i could add an option to the poll i would of made the "i think grapples should be limited to snipers or other limited kit". so sorry if you think that and you don't have an option.....my mistake.
Hate to tell ya mate but when i am fully geared up i way just over 110kg and i can climb a rope the length of the grappling hook in game...

HangMan: BF2 Editor, it has very strict limitations memory wise, and crashes all the time. Its like a girl. Treat it with respect and take it slow and you'll get places. Rush and get ahead of yourself and it will turn around and punch you in the mouth

One thing about grapple hooks that is annoying. On urban insurgency maps, Karabala especially I find the USA team always use roofs to bypass all the ambushes. The way the map is laid out makes this an effective strategy for the Americans.

As an insurgent hardly anyone goes Collaborator (for good reason) making it odd that the insurgents end up becoming less mobile than the American team.

prove it...video evidence. 30ft rope with helmet, IBA front, back and side sapi plates, knee pads, elbow pads, weapon, 300 rds of ammo, radio, extra batteries NVG's, show me stud, but look around your unit.....how many of them you think can? i would guess somewhere around 10% max. and would only be able to climb it once......the only exception would be if your in a high speed unit...and if so....you should know the elite arnt represented in this game anymore....

why are we still discussing this???????

1st Commando Regiment: Facts, Discussion Forum, and Encyclopedia Article

That's the regiment Tonnie is in, similar to the Royal Marines in Afghanistan I think. Also I think he would take his own gear, not what you tell him to carry ;)

Were aware the grapple hook currently has some unrealistic qualities, particularly the speed at which the players climb etc.

but editing the grapple hook is very difficult, if someone is up for it we would be glad to have it edited to be more realistic.

its currently in PR to represent the infantry ability to scale and climb things in game that would be possible IRL... getting on rooftops, etc is crucial for urban combat, and most times IRL they would enter the building to get to the rooftop, but unfortunately prety much all vbf2 buildings are non enterable.

infantry definitely carry ropes, ladders, rams and other tools to negotiate obstacles, implementing all these tools would be very time intensive and restricted by the BF2 engine, the grapple is kind of a metaphor for some of these tools.

Having a specialist with grapple is useful in a squad but I dont see it overly abused right now, but maybe on some maps like karbala it might be.
