Program to use for modelling..???

Post by 5m0oth_0p3r4t0r »

Hi, this is for all you talented modellers out there posting WIP and such..
First, sorry if it’s been posted but I searched and found nothing..
I would like to maybe start modelling, and it might just end up being stuff of interest to this mod..
What I would like to know is exactly what formats you need to export to..?
As I’m already “modelling” in CATIA V4/V5 and have some experience in that.. Can I use that program or do I NEED to get into a new tool..
Don’t have any “portfolio” so to speak as I am abroad and pretty much only have one piece of previous work available to me..
But here goes.. a Saitek Cyborg 3D, in CATIA..

these first two are "in program"

and that was a render..
But image quality is shit on all three..

please advise..!!??

modelling for bf2...
is mostly done in Max or Maya...
because of the export plugins.

dont know wether there are any plugins for Catia...

If it can export to .mb, then you can use it fine with bf2. Alternatively, if it can export to a file type that either max or maya can open, you can model in whatever you like, you'll just need one of those two to get it into the editor.

thanks a heap..!!
just realized I can export to .wrl and that can be converted to .x3d which I think is supported by Maya and Max..? .wrl might also be supported..?
but, from experience, the .wrl files look like “shite” when viewed in like Cartona or other .wrl browsers.. is it just the interface or do they “loose information” when exported..?

(I found THIS Maya .wrl, not to encouraging.. 1o1)

other export formats supported are:
.stp .igs .stbom .cgr
do any of those ring a bell..? could they be better..?
that’s what is built into the program, don’t know about other possibilities..

still, thanks..!!

[EDIT]
loooool!!!111 I just got a surprisingly funny idea.. this is a reality mod, right..? and you want “true to life” models, right..?
I HAVE full access to the CATIA models of the; Tiger, NH90, EC135 and EC145, that I know of.. to make it REAL easy, I could just burn those to a disk and, hey, this mod would have the best helicopter models known to the gaming community..
Then again.. I’d be faced with criminal charges for steeling patented material.. worth quite a few million €.. I think I might just model it myself then..
[/EDIT]

It might not look great because of losing smoothing or something? Also, some formats tend to clone vertices when exported/imported, so select all and do a weld to fix it.

I don't recognise any of those other formats as something max can import, although they may work. Next time I have max open, I'll take a look for you.

However, seeing as you're going to need it anyway for exporting the file, you may as well get max or maya and learn to use it properly :p

THANKS!!

and

I might just do that, I'll get on DC++ as soon as I get back to Sweden.. my ISP here in Germany sucks.. they choke my bandwidth when I get on P2P programs..

(About the elephant, I think it’s just a really old model (like 5-7 years or more) but I thought it was so funny I just had to post it..)
