Patrol Routes

Post by Mary.au »

Righto, I did a search and found nothing relevant.

The other day while playing on Mestia I had the idea that we could implement patrol routes or paths into the game, for squad members to follow.

We were sitting on a flag, defending, all in a little huddle. So I asked, "What do you want us to do sl?" He replied that he wanted us to patrol the area, to widen our view of the area. Tactically I thought it was a good idea, so we all wandered off in admiration of the landscape. A few minutes later one of the sm's spotted someone, who we surely would have missed if we'd just camped, which lead us to a squad which we ambushed and took down there rally.

Afterward I thought, "Wouldn't it be cool if patrols like that were more frequent", so I had the idea that the SL could lay down way points, A, B, C, D, for the squad to patrol in a loop. The markers would be like the commander ones, only they would be visible to that specific squad.

I think the advantages of this would be:

- Cover more area, and spot enemy's that would have gone noticed.

- Keeps the guys occupied, preventing members from running off and attacking, or just plain wandering off

- Realistic

So yeah, this is only a quick writeup, throw any more suggestions this way. :-P

would be a nice feature if the squadleader could add waypoints for the squad

would be even cooler if you could individually give routes to certain squad members but that prob pushing it abit much

Yeah patrols when holding a point are really important. I'm not sure about visual way points but stepping up and doing them will 100% make your stance better.

I try to explain doing a butterfly. Send out a patrol and have them search in in loops.

I like it. Squad specific waypoints would really help.

so you can give them precise areas you want them to go to. This just helps because unless you want to give out orders evry minute of telling them were to walk to next on the patrol.

I don't see the benefit of having a extra visual aid for patrolling.

1) the maps aren't big enough to get lost

2) I'd expect on a 32-64 population on a 2k map its more likely than not that you will be engaged on ur 'patrol' by something and your route will be thrown out of the window in the ensuing battle.

3) all you have to do is say over voip "we'll patrol between points A B and C" using landmarks like sharpe turns in the road, buildings or clearings.

I don't tend to use 'patrols' as a strategy personally, I tend to remain at positions of defencive advantage, then move up to the next advantagous position engaging what I need to on the way. the closest I get to a 'patrol' is a rally point sweep around the aformentioned defencive position. (very useful on Mestia)

Donno if this is too offtopic, but anyways. I think i would be great is squad members could also make markers.

IRL if you wanna point something to your squad you would hold out your hand and point instead of trying to explain it verbally. In PR you could set up a different color marker than the SL.

(also i didn't search so sorry if this has been already suggested)

Incorrect.

Group
Range
Indication
Type of fire.

Squaddies in the British army use that to point out the enemy location.

Also, @ rudd, I can see the point of patroling especially in maps like Mestia where the Cap radius is so large, to clear the area.

If you are contacted, you take care of that contact, and then carry on your patrol.

Type of fire is more from the officer, but yah, Group means how many, range(range) indication is 'Big mofoing tree 2 o'clock from axis of advance' or similar IIRC.
