Role-play it! If you want realism, go all the way!

Hm,

I suppose a healthy mix of both does the trick. A bit of military lingo doesn't hurt, is effective to let the squad know what to do / what's going on and helps giving PR the feel it is supposed to create.

I also find it pretty frustrating if you don't know who is who in the squad when bullets start to fly, because let's face it: Most of the on-screen names are such tongue-twisters that by the time you finish pronouncing the first one, your squad is dead (like 'open_bracket-BADASSMOFOS-closed_bracket-IOAIN_GRUFFUD, put some suppressive fire onto that house to the le....ah ****, I'm dead'). So identifying squad-members by number sounds like a good idea, even if I have never tried it in practice.

Full-immersion role-play doesn't really do it for me either, if somebody starts yelling at me with some unidentifiable stream of acronyms in a pseudo-Texan accent I usually:

a) Ask him kindly to remove the rod from his rectum

and

b) Point out that I am a consciencious objector and as such despise everything to do with the military.

Usually shuts them up, if onyl because they kick me out of their squad...

Really i don't mind if people are going to talk there military lingo and play with some realism but I can't bring myself to play with people who want to pretend their in the Marines or something.

It's quite sad how they try to organize everything down to a small detail then everything unravels as soon as an enemy shoots. Look, anyway you put it PR is a GAME played by normal people and real soldiers alike but the whole point is to have fun. No disrespect to current soldiers but if i can have a realistic experience, a laugh and some fun than that's all I want out out of it. Really you have to be at least a bit like a normal person and not a drill sergeant when you're being an SL. We can all do without all the (extreme) military formalities and details

Whenever I play I never get lazy and such. I only occasionally joke around like how saying how <insert squad mate name here> looks like one of the infidels (while playing taliban or insurgents) in an Arabic accent.

I completly agree, I cannot stand those drill sergeant type squad leaders. They truely suck the fun out of the game. I had this squad leader a couple weeks ago on the TG server. We took a boat down this river and were going to out flank the enemy. However the SL wanted the element of suprise which diddn't work because there was 2 enemy soldiers who spotted us all running and were going towards our rally and were about to fire at us all. I layed down and tried to kill them. To both save my squad and the rally so we could spawn than my SL just yelled at me for what seemed like a minute. So to avoide this guy getting his panties in a twist all map I just stopped firing and ran. If I stayed there I had a good chance of killing them before they took out the rally and by directing fire to me by shooting I saved my squad of being killed.

However because he yelled at me to stop shooting and move up to where he was. They got the rally. They encountered a enemy squad defending the flag (as expected) and were killed by on-going gernades and 50 cal fire. They walked right into there defensive line.

Those two soldiers got the rally so we couldn't spawn and had to re-do it all over again from main. Yet of course he pinned everything on me and he was my little drill sergeant for the entire map.

Some people need to just realize that it's just a game and require to relax.

you lot should get on mumble on a British map

nothing scarier in this mod than a sudden cry of "BAYONET CHARGE" from a nearby bush.

Aha i love it when people like that come into my squad, it adds another element of fun to the game. One thing I don't like about PR's voip community are the TOO SERIOUS people, who if they die they start shouting their heads off, or if you accidently run into an opponents mine they shout at you for not seeing it. Those people are annoying and not fun to be in a squad with.

I genuinely hate the shit out of people that are talking constantly.
And I dislike people that talks a lot and gives too much or unnecessary information.
Not because it's annoying, but it lowers the actual sounds in the game and therefore it's hard to hear all the tiny noices that needs to be heard. Footsteps, RPs, gunfire etc.

Example:
A simple "infantry, one, niner, five, rooftop" is waaaaay better than a
"we got infantry on the rooftop uuh... between south and onehundredninetyfive. hes shooting at me! oh my god i need a medic!! wheres that medic? im dyyyyyying here! f*** im down. can anyone revive me? im dead.".
And as if that's not enough, they usually go on talking about something else because they're dead and bored.

Thank god someone else said it.

He makes me look like a quiet *******. Though I gotta say I can't complain when hes around my squad.

Nah I'm the kinda guy that'll ***** and moan it up with the rest of ya'll anytime. I've actually noticed myself doing the thing roob hates but not to that extreme. If your in my squad and I get shot but make it to cover I've been known to say.

"That ******* shot me. What the hell did I ever do to him?"

You gotta keep PR from getting to serious sometimes. Half the fun is the CF that gets created when an engagement starts. Hell I've had some good stories with guys while walking to the next objective and it keeps the game from becoming a bore.

Definitely.
The boring part of PR is walking around the wilderness with no chat in the squad or anything happening because the squad leader is so serious. The fun part is shooting stuff, and having prolonged engagements against enemy squads, with yours working together. Good teamwork is developed by some intelligence, lots of practice and knowing the basics - calling targets, knowing each others' position and fullfilling your role etc. It doesn't come from thinking your a real soldier every time you load up PR - see other games.

Lol. To be honest, the current mumble setup is okay but really needs improving, I mean having everyone in the same channel is a bit weird. And anyone can just hop over and have a listen to the other squad leaders if they want.

Straying a tad off-topic?

Semi realism gaming FTW. Rudd and SqnLdr play it at just the right level.

I'm not suggesting it can work better in another voice program, just that as things are this is possible for people to do if they so wish.

you need tobe an airtraffic controller to manage that...

puglous wrote:I might be alone here, but for some reason this annoys me to no end. That is, when you are playing in a squad with VOIP and people are talking like they're smoking pot, half asleep, or both. I'm aware that's a condition a lot of BF2 players may find themselves in, but I still wish people would be a bit more spirit during battle when using VOIP. It totally kills the mood when people are saying things like "*Yawn* Hey dude...uh...like, enemies to the West and *yawn* stuff...............[they finally release their finger on the VOIP key after about a minute]" while bullets are wizzing by my head.

Now, I don't go as far as role-playing in Project Reality (you know, screaming about Allah when you are the Insurgents or anything like that), but there's usually a sense of desperation in my tone. Even so, I wouldn't mind role-playing, as long as people didn't yell blood curdling screams into their mic every time they died.

I'd like to hear your oppinions, though. Is the way people speak on VOIP an issue for you, and if so, what kind of communication style do you like the most?
Funny thing you mention this but I find myself often enough being quite 'enthusiastic' up to a certain degree where one might come to think there actually is a real tank charging through this guys room. That said I do like it when people have this specific tone in there voice when you just know they are with you all way taking this as serious as you should take a game like that.
And as always in life there is a downside to this also because some individuals just over do it with screaming all the time blowing your ears off and shouting useless information rendering you unable to actually focus on whats important momentarily. Not to mention those not having there VOIP set up properly either being to loud and distorted all the time or quite the opposite.
But all in all I am rather happy with it.
