British Tank/Armor crews and their sidearm/rifles

Post by kilroy0097 »

This was a question raised a long time ago. I finally got a credible answer to it. So just in case the Devs or whoever originally asked the question is still wondering, here is the answer.

Question: What assault rifle or personal defense weapon do modern British tank crews use due to limited space?

Answer: For a sidearm they use the Browning Hi-Power pistol. for their main fire arm they use a L22 A2 assault rifle. this is a shorter version of the L85 A2 assault rifle(SA80). it can also be called the L85 carbine.

Ye we know about the L22, its an awesome weapon :D

Here's Fortnight with a L22 with Eotech hehe :D
(the guys at Bovington did this to see what it was like, not common for a eotech to be mounted on a SA80)

The weapon is rather low priority, since its only really used by Crewman and as such, would be hardly used ingame.

EDIT: also here is a pic of a poster of the Driver area of the CR2 where you can see the L22 mounted on a special mount inside just for it :D

well if pilot kits were to be distinguished between heli and jet then the L22 would get more usage plus with the new chopper dynamics meaning surviving a crash is more likely it might be good to have it for the heli crews, in the long run.

That looks suspiciously like an SA80 non-carbine to me...

with the current war alot of armor units have been used as an infantry role and of course they have been issued M4s, but traditionaly they only carry an M9 while serving as straight tankers

that probably fits them both, however it still looks like a L85 noncarbine

Its an older picture pre-carbine. We used to get normal SA80 fitted with iron sights, which were mounted in the cab in front of the driver as Rhino's picture shows. The newer fittings are in a new box which has been retro-fitted into the rear right hand bin on the back of the turret bustle. Just for interest, the carbine is issued 2 x per CR2 for the loader/operator and the driver, pistols are issued to the commander and gunner (CR2).

From what I read the US Marines adopted a new motto, "That every marine is a rifleman", including pilots, officers (not on the actual battlefield) etc.

Maybe the US Army has done similar.

So marine SAW gunners carry rifles ar well then? I don't think that's meant to be taken literally.
