Right, I am in danger of making myself look like a right fool (yet again), but what the hell...

I am relatively new to PR, have only been playing for a couple of months. Now, due to years of FPS experience dating back to Quake (and the original Castle Wolfenstein long before that), I thought that I was a pretty decent shot with a mouse...until .:IGI:.'s epic Mumble Night last week.

Turns out I can't shoot for shit! After two or more hours of battling across Muttrah, I found to my embarrassement that although I had emptied dozend of clips, my kill total was 2! And those were from a lucky AT shot that took out an APC with driver and gunner just before the end (documented for eternity here: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f10-pr ... th-19.html).

I knew that I would not have hit everything I shot at, but come on....not a single rifle kill??? That's just pitiful. :o ops:

So, I think I am in serious need of some target practice to get a better feel of bullet spread, distance, etc... Problem is there is no firing range on any of the practice maps or anything, so I am reduced to taking potshots at parked cars on Muttrah (marking them to get a distance, moving to a set position, firing a set of 5 rounds, and then checking with the scope how close the hits are, then moving further back, changing stance, etc...).

It's all a bit slapdash but I can't figure out a better way of improving, so any suggestions would be most welcome! I would also love to figure out how to use the damned grenade launcher for effect, again a nice range with marked distances would go down very nicely with the uninitiated.

Last of all, a question regarding your weapon of choice: Do you prefer the scope (accurate but slow to bring to bear), the Aimpoint (quick and accurate) or the iron sights (butt-ugly)?

Cheers for any useful input, I need all the help I can get, evidently.

(This post also disproves the statement in my sig that virtual warfare is far less embarrassing than looking like a tool on an Airsoft outing...)

Firstly, If you have the time hold your rifle steady on the target for 3-5 seconds your chance of hitting him shoots up. Also try and elt the recoil settle before letting off more rounds, i remember you from the Muttrah Round 9 (was your squad leader).

In reference to Optics or ironsights, recently I've been playing Ironsights a lot more for some reason i find it better to shoot with the whole scenery around you instead of just looking down a scope.

Ok. If you go to Operation Archer, On the American side there are firing ranges at the U.S. Main.

Also, if I remember right there are also firing ranges on Ramiel at the U.S. Main. Just look around and you'll find them.

Tips: moving messes up your aim, Just picture the HAT reticule on your rifles and how it reacts to movement etc and you will see how all weapons deviate. When shooting guns like the m16a4 ACOG use put your target under the triangle not on the tip. The rest you will eventually figure out as you play.

Yeah when i first started playing 0.85 i couldn't hit anything with the G3A3 but now I can pretty much snipe moving targets withing just a few rounds at like 400m in kashan with it. Just do your best to get used to how fast the bullet travels, and how much drop there is past the scope zero (for assault rifles its 300m before the bullet starts to drop) and start noticing the time you take to settle and not move when you shoot, and how much accuracy you have with different amounts of settle time.

best target range i found is the US base in ramiel behind the repair station.

Or download singleplayer, and then set bot difficultly to 20 and play an insurgency map as the US/UK and you'll have actual "people" for targets. Benefits are that they move, they're player models, and it's easy to see when you kill them (on account of them dropping dead). Plus you can keep boosting the difficulty as you get better at killing them, which helps your skills a lot too. If you search the single player forums, you can find how to make the respawn timer when you're dead to 1 second, which helps when all you want to do is practice.

I was alright with a rifle in PR, nothing great but usually around a 1:1 ratio. After playing with the bots on a difficulty of 90 for a few rounds until I can beat them soundly I've become a much better shot and player in general. At a skill level of 90 the bots are basically given an aimhack, so you learn how to use cover real quick. Seriously, they fire from the hip while strafing and consistently get headshots from 200+ meters.

dont use wasd while shooting, it completely messes up your aim. This is the massive difference between this and quake. Find a good place to take a shot, then try not to move if you dont have to. Crouching behind a wall and popping up and down to shoot is fine, but strafing left and right between shots will mean you dont hit much at over 100m.

Don't be too hard on yourself and your aim. Could be that you just ran into a tight group of squads with proper medic support. If they revive someone that you put down you don't get to claim the kill. Used to be very frustrating when there were entire medic squads in the older builds.

Hey everyone,

Thanks a lot for all the good advice, plenty there for me to keep in mind and try out. Will check out the firing ranges, and then give the Single Player Turkey Shoot a whirl as well :firing: !

In a few weeks time, I'll hopefully be hitting things smaller than your average barn door...

As an aside I realised that my post did not exactly represent good advertisement for my skills to any squad leaders (although Smuke gracefully avoided any scathing comments ), but at the very least I kept the other side ducking...suppressive fire being very much undervalued in my humble opinion. So if you are looking for a guy to throw lots of lead in the general direction of the next enemy FB, I'm your man!

This I never knew, will have to try that, as I am having trouble putting anyone down with the M4 on anything other than 3 shot burst! :x

Shooting rages are in a couple of maps If you would like to test accuracy and deviation with various weapons. Try Ramiel: Inside the US main in the north east corner of the main itself. Also Try Archer and theres one in the Chechen Training Camp in like G2/H2 Grid on Kozelsk.

Try project reality single player the AI are not very smart but they are good targets and there are a lot of them at varying distances so now u can base it of of what it looks like rather then the actual distance. There is no greater practice than the real thing
