Joystick as guncontroller

Post by jimmyhoffa24 »

Hi there !

I've been wondering if it is possible to use your joystick to control the gun of an attack chopper, this would make it much more realistic. It will also be more accurate ( no more bouncing of the crosshair ).

Kind regards

Hi, Welcome to the forums.

You're another cheecky one, trying to get around the post limit for suggestions aren't you? :p

Controlling the gun with a joystick would not fix the 'bouncing of the crosshair' unless the gunner had full stabailisation, from what I've read on these forums, that'll never be perfect.

There was a thread up about controlling a tanks main gun with the keyboard (which can be configured as joystick control) but I can't remember the outcome on that one. if it's possible for that, it's most likely the same for choppers. I aggree, although I've never gunned a chopper IRL, this would be more realistic.

you can simply in your control settings set the joystick to act in the mouse look bit (as well as the mouse) :D

Wouldn't that screw up the settings, so that I also have to move my character with my joystick ?

Where exactly do you set mouse look?

The only way i know of to do this would be to use joytokey which lets you bind keyboard/mouse stuff to joysticks. Tho, it would be moving the mouse while you're using the joystick for anything else. Might not be too bad if you only use it to pilot and gun. You could even hit the free look button and use the joystick to look around. I might try it myself.

Got something here guys.

The program is called Joystick-To-Mouse.
It allows me to use the joystick as a mouse ( working both at the same time).
In this program you can also callibrate al kinds of things, really helpfull ! :D

linkie to download > Joystick-To-Mouse - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

Going to try it out now in a chopper or tank.

Yeah, joytokey does the same thing. I just tried it out. I'm not really liking aiming with a joystick, but using it while being pilot, to look out the side windows without taking my hands off the joystick is great.

Tried ingame, moving the cursor in menu still works. However when I hop in a vehicle I cant use to joystick to look around

In a helicopter or jet you still have to hold down the mouse look key to look around.

But surely if you use JoyToKey then you get no variable movement - it's just on or off?

I got everything working with a program called Joystick2Mouse3.

I am able to control everything with my joystick as I would with my mouse, I can also bind keys to the joystick ! :D

Well Combined Arms got the whole 'controlling tank gun with joystick' thing working, so this shouldn't be too hard to do I suppose.

You can set your alternate controls to your joystick so you can swap between the mouse and joystick.

Would using a joystick make it more realistic? No, it wouldn't. If anything it'd just making it really friggin' hard to shoot something.

In Combined Arms there are ways to get around having to use WASD for the turret and there is nothing anybody can do about it (it's not a hack or anything like that).

Yer, why would you wanna do this? The only advantage I could see is you can fire not straight ahead, but that's only in CA atm. If you have looking set to mouse, like most people then it means you can look around whilst still flying, your way means you have to do one or the other :/

No if you just move the joystick a little bit the mouse will move slow.

I use xpadder for my xbox360 controller when I play FPS games, just set the right stick up to act as a mouse.

And I hate people going "Why would you do that? Mouse and keyboard is better" well I could not care less, sure my aim will be a little bit better with a mouse but I like playing with a gamepad so that's what I'm going to do.
