Actually it can go the other way too. Tanks can't defend themselves easily in urban ops, which require infantry to clear out the terrain around them. Had to go defend a disabled abrams in Mosul last year.

Looks like the discussion has fired up pretty well, maybe too well, but anyway, thanks for the replies, and the info about APC ammunition. Sure didn't know about that!

But, about the TUSK in BF2, doesn't the rear phone sound a bit irrelevant?
We should discuss about the balance, and speculate if there is a way to implement the thermal sightning, mentoned in the picture.

And one final thing, are there any tank crewmen around, or someone with enough knowledge, who can tell me, that is it possible for a tank to travel completely underwater? If yes, should this feature be in project reality?

completely underwater?
as far as the schematic known on public database goes, no... the crew probably can survive for a while by shutting down the external ventilation, but the engine is a different story. So will it be operational? no.

specialized tanks with additional equipment that allows them to travel in shallow water such as small river beds do exist, but most MBTs don't pack these as far as i know.

someone else probably can confirm it.

I have seen some video footage of a German tank, probably one of the Leopards, being tested with a very long snorkel system and a large extension tube on the commander's cupola. The vehicle was driving at the bottom of a testing pool and the commander was riding above the water in the extended cupola, which must have added about 6 feet to the top of the tank. I suppose it could be possible, but it would take quite a few minutes, perhaps even an hour, of preparation for such deep water fording.

[Edit]Yep, Leopard. According to sources it can ford 4 meter depths with this goofy-looking but probably functional thing.

Even if it is possible, I don't this should be a feature in PR because of the considerable time it would probably take to prepare a tank to do so.

Yes, the majority of modern MBTs can go underwater after 15-30 min preparation

All Russian MBT at least since the T72 can go underwater, up to 4-5 meter deep for 1km. A special snorkel equipment must be installed. It takes around 20min to prepare the tank.

The Abrams and as mentioned, the Leopard 2 can go underwater too.

I think PR must stay away from the underwater capability.
