Well I'm Aviation so I don't all those nice little 19D or 19K or 11B toys to play with. But I know my bird pretty well, and I can say for sure that the sights we use on there will go over 2 miles.Anderson29 wrote:well, i dont know how good the goggles are but we (the army) have many thermal imaging devices that can see several kilometers. for example C.R.O.W. has thermal, the TOW's ITAS has thermal and we put it up in guard towers and HMMWVs as well, w/o the TOW tube (aka donkey puncher). also FLIR like the person above me said on aircraft.

the one with the engine block glowing.....showing heat...which means the thermal imaging device in on white hot. i've never heard it called infrared but it's a device showing hot spots and says thermal on the actual device....one can only make a rather safe assumption...lol

Re: Apache Suggestion
What's "infer red"? Or are you thinking of infra red?
Infra red cameras and thermal cameras are the same thing, thermal (or infra red) cameras works just like a normal camera but instead of picking up the visible red, yellow and blue light that we can see, it picks up the infra red light that everything above absolute zero degrees emits and then converts it to red, yellow and blue colors on a monitor so that we can see it.
They probably limit the colors to two different ones (green/white, black/white etc) on systems such as the FLIR on the apache just because it would cause information overload if the entire battlefield in front of you were in all the colors of the rainbow

since your talking about apache interworkings I have to shut up cuz its classified. But I can say this, You'd be suprised. Its the pannels in the cockpit. Their heavy duty and can only display like 4 colors xD (with lighter and darker)Cp wrote:They probably limit the colors to two different ones (green/white, black/white etc) on systems such as the FLIR on the apache just because it would cause information overload if the entire battlefield in front of you where in all the colors of the rainbow

I'm not trying to be an ******* here,
but you claim to be a 15R and don't know how to spell forward looking Infrared or exactly what it is? I know that you may not be directly assigned to work on the systems, like the FLIR, but you should at least know what it is.

anyways...good thing CP looked it up...or actually knows what he's talking about. all i care about is operations...not the science behind it.
on the ITAS, it has a simulator that lets you simulate launching and guiding TOW rockets. we use to practice destroying anything that moved with that simulator. made some hilarious videos but my camera got destroyed
. its wierd what you see in the summer nights w/ thermal vision from a good distance away....

It's a 15Y job. Romeos aren't allowed to touch the TADS or the PNVS. I know what I know because they've asked for a hand with taking stuff off and they explained what was going on in the mean time.ryanb43 wrote:I'm not trying to be an ******* here,

That looks cool but its still the Alpha model Apache. The current model is the Delta, and it has 3 visual screens for the co pilot instead of that stupid binocular looking thing that sticks out in front of his face.'[R-CON wrote:nedlands1;963928']Here are some 3D tours, courtesy of the UK's MoD.

Hey, Sparatan, I was wondering how you might think of CA's FLIR. It's not actual FLIR per se, it's done with post processing. But I think it looks cool and it's helped many people out. Here's a quick screenie:

Hoping it might help out with your suggestion in some way.

Hey that looks pretty good, but everything thats nightvision is in a "O" like in that video and I dont think I've ever seen a pilot use it on the MPD's. They always use it in the IIHADS.McLuv wrote:Hey, Sparatan, I was wondering how you might think of CA's FLIR. It's not actual FLIR per se, it's done with post processing. But Alex showed me a video recently of FLIR and it looked like ...zomg amazing. Props. I can't wait to see what the Devs do in .86 or whatever the next version is. I'll gladly work with them on making that part of it correctly.
Any Devs that want a hand with it, give me a holla

Re: Apache Suggestion
Quick question - I didn't know there were controls in both cockpits? Are there or is that a movie plot device?
And in a real Apache does the co-pilot shoot the gun or the pilot?
