PR made me enjoy Vanilla more?

Post by h0mie »

Hey guys!
To tell first please no comments like"vanilla noob" or similar, thanks.

Im playing PR for some Time now (approx. a year - when i have time to play), but lately I somehow experienced that playing PR let me enjoy vanilla more and made me a better vanilla player?
To get this right, i think the Concept of PR is an excellent one and very enjoyable when played right. I really love the tactical and realistic aspekt of the mod, such as the teamplay in the squad, the need for more communication, and the connection between the units like in Real Life ( for example when calling in an airstrike).
I only think the problem of PR are these things: First you dont achieve the whole tactical aspect most of the time. When played in a good squad its a blast, but most of the time the squads lack initiative und cooperation.
Secondly (and i think im gonna get a lots of flames for this) the Problem is the other extreme of the community: A lot of people woh had been in the army or some military part and it seems they still mistake more difficult with more realistic. Of course PR must find the compromise between the hardcoded engine and simulating realism, but although you think it would be akward enough seeing enemies standing 50m appart and not hitting each other still some people on these forums think its still too easy. It still is a game and it already doesnt lack complexity, dont make it even worse.
Last but not least There was this quote from the "Ross Kemp in Afghanistan" Series, were he says "War is a mixture of moments of extreme action and long times of boredom". Under this aspect i think you can recognize PR just fine, the only problem is that i understand the long times of boredom being part of Real Life Military Operations, but i dont get the point in "playing times of non action", still its a game.

So after beeing just very frustrated i turned vanilla on after a very long period of time and had surprisingly lots of fun and Success, maybe it was just that PR makes you more aware of the areas around you?
Anyone else experiencing some of these points?

Good post. I do enjoy my rounds of Road to Jalalabad more now. vBF2 will always be my favorite FPS right behind Unreal Tournament. ;)

During the boring parts of PR, I find myself playing Company of Heroes and I just Alt-Tab back in when I hear action in PR again.

don't worry, you don't need ur flamesuit. But I do disagree to an extent. I feel that once you understand how deviation works, all targets at all ranges are viable to you. I'm not saying your gonna get 1000m shots with teh M16, but 50m is pretty easy in my experience. If you expect to come round a corner of a building, see a dude at 50m and you fire at him without waiting then expect to live despite the fact you are not in cover....you need to revise your tactics, though the implementation of Combined arms ballistics would certainly help this.

Your 'more difficult' arguement does apply to choppers I believe. (Combined arms FTW)

I don't get bored in PR. If my squad is overwatching south village in defence and the rest of the team is attacking, I'm doing my job and there are things to be done to keep myself entertained. FB contruction, supply organisation (can never have too much supplies, ever) etc.

Though I do believe playing PR has made me better at a variety of games, COD4 and BF2 both included. As I play almost every FPS in the same way I play PR. Moving from cover to cover etc.

Since I play PR I am getting worse and worse in games like COD 4. It's not like I actually enjoy this type of games, but sometimes I have to play it with my RL friends. But why is that?

PR taught me to play slowly, advancing from cover to cover, using the ironsights or optics, waiting before shooting, firing only single shots at a greater distance. If you do that in these action games, you're dead. Everytime I start COD or even vBF2, I am so glad that there is game out there that features both online teamplay and realism and a community that allows me to enjoy it. Thank you!

I think too that playing PR has made me appreciate vBF2 more.
I would say that playing PR, talking and interacting with other players has upped my general enjoyment of gaming.
I have a good 'E-buddy' base, where we can simply load into a vbf2 server and work together or just have a laugh.

I think PR has put in the missing link in 'the market', headed towards the other end of the spectrum from VBf2. Its nice to have options.

i too agreee that vBF2 is more fun..more action and more hectic. but PR is definately alot more rewarding and more memorable. theres alot more oh SHI*! and OMG! moments in PR which makes it a better game.

as for squads, i usually find a good populated server and stick with it. then learn who the regulars are, who are the good leaders .. etc

I like vanilla and PR. I do prefer PR but with vanilla you just have the ability to hop on and play some quick rounds of karkand. The problem is with PR is that sometimes the walking is just to much and it can get boring.

Since I have played PR I never played vanilla again...

So I dont know how it affects me in that way. Maybe I should try it one day... but then I again I would use my gaming time not on PR but on vanilla ;)

Yea I have to agree with you. When i got back to BF2 Vanilla with some of my friends, I cannot believe I thought about 'nilla, the way I now feel about PR.

to the OP. You made a good post, and I can see why you'd think that way. But to me, its the opposite :)

I recently tried vanilla after a lot of time on PR. It is fun, but you can't help feeling the shallow gameplay of vanilla compared to PR. As for applying your tactics and skill from PR into vanilla, I found it didn't help much, as the enemy commander knows where you are at all times and you can get hit by artillery at any time.

However, I used some techniques that I usually use in PR in Counterstrike Source lol, and found that it worked. Me and my bro played a LAN game and he crouched in front of me and I aimed my rifle over the top of him, giving cover and extra firepower. Seemed to work pretty well. This might have been something I learned when I was in SAS 22nd Elite Virtual Regiment though.

I would play more Vanilla if these things would be fixed:
- Can cap enemy main base (and get even more assets) while other team cannot -> insta vehicle whoring most of the time.
-Lacking ground to air power.
-Commander spam.

I have played PR since .65 or something like that and I recently tried vBf2 and it sucked! The tactics you adapt to in PR do NOT work in Bf2. Vanilla is just a bunch of guys bunny hopping around firing full automatic and grenade spamming. I will probably never enjoy playing Bf2 after playing PR. ALso there is barely any communication, or teamwork even.

i never really played vBF2 to begin with so when me and a few buddies went on a vBF2 server a couple months ago, i didnt even know how to play. i was trying to request kits and put down RPs, worried about bleeding after being shot or revived/reviving, and all kinds of other stuff that just doesnt work outside of PR. it was also pure chaos. i felt like i was continuously spawning into a battle with barely enough time to grab another beer. the HAT also gets like 7-8 rockets, although the rockets only fly at about 35 mph so they're not *that* dangerous.

we didnt last long on the server and playing vBF2 gave me even more appreciation for PR. just going back and seeing the old HUD is a shock.

as far as the topic goes...i tried to play vBF2 with the same style i play PR with, and it didnt seem to give me much of an advantage. that was the original reason i searched for a mod.

bf2 vanilla is more like instant gratification, which doesnt last long and is repetative; PR is build up and climax, epic and legendary.

Completely different for me, after playing PR I cannot stand Vanilla anymore. It's just a horribly unrealistic and non-fun game. Not to mention that the players in Vanilla are definetly not PR players. They are no team-work based, most do not have a microphone and majority will TK you in a instant for choppers or jets. Majority servers let it go unpunished.

Vanilla is just a chaosed seperate world from PR and you only can realize that by experiencing PR. The only reason vBF2 is still on my PC is because I require it to play PR.

It sure is a different experience for each individual.

I have never played vanilla. Actually, I have, but it must have been for like... 1 hour? It just doesn't feel right for me, not a game that suits my gaming style.
