What's the point of a sniper?

Post by Astromici »

Let me make it clear that I am definetly not against sniping, as I love the weapon. But what else is there to love? There's no point of having a sniper in the team.

In guides and stuff, they say the role of a sniper is to do recon for the team, lase targets, and take out enemy officers.

1. Recon for the team is useless without a commander, which is most of the time.

2. Jets and choppers aren't in the air long enough for target lasing to be effective.

3. You can't see kit details at sniper rifle range, which I would say is upwards of 350 meters.

So we're stuck with the problem of sniper being a really useless asset to the team, even though 1-2 men aren't that much.

We're also stuck with the inherent weaknesses of the sniper, which is: flanking, being spotted. If you've ever played as a sniper before, you know how easy it is to be flanked, because you only ever have a view of one area, and you probaly aren't paying too much attention to what's behind you.
And to spot a sniper, all someone has to do is pop up with binoculars and see you instantly. There's rarely enough time for a sniper to take out someone who just pops up with a set of binoculars, sees you, then pops back down.

So, ask not what the Team can do for the sniper, but what the sniper can do for the team.

After all, the goal of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other bast*rd die for his!

The point of sniper is just to kill the lonewolfers giving them a lesson.

Which is really useful to filter out the VBF2'ers.

If your good at sniping and you don't take out anyone from closer than 330 meters, you can rape a whole squad.

2. Jets and choppers aren't in the air long enough for target lasing to be effective. WRONG!

3. You can't see kit details at sniper rifle range, which I would say is upwards of 350 meters. WRONG!

I agree with your first 1.

Ok you dont always need a commander, team chat goes along way. To be honest if you and your spotter are on a hill and see a squad moving round the flank, you've possible just saved the round. Oh and the jets, PRT C7 kashan desert, Sir.Oddsodz did not get shot down once, only death he had was a DC at beggining of round. And many other pilots ive seen have been up 30-40 minutes atleast. The sniper is kind of like what the Combat engineer is used as, a 2 man required officer kit to do a specific task. Engineer can build FOBs, snipers can bring hellfires and what not.

I disagree with 2 and 3.
I've done it many times on Kashan for example that I took officer kit, one SM took the sniper kit and the third one got into the frogfoot/A10. I designated targets with laser and/or attack marker for the jet and the sniper took out high valued targets, for example a guy with an AA kit, or a manned AA emplacement etc. Some kit geometry wont appear in long distances, but if someone has the SA7,or eryx in his hands you WILL see it no matter how far you are...
Other option is that the officer and the sniper take up positions 500m from each other to cover more ground, and the sniper can still lase targets.

In short: a sniper still has it's use in PR methinks.
The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not "Eureka!" [I found it!] but "That's funny . . . "

snipers need to be verbose, they need to give real info, take a position and feed information to the team. I quite like going sniper and try and provide active information, movements of enemy can be vital especially when you don't have a commander.

I don't like snipers that just think it's a case of people that lone wolfing to try and get kills which in PR its not its role. It amazes me the times it people that are silent that take the kit and call they're squad recon.

In someway i think having it as a special kit makes it worse. Make it something that you have to think more. Deploy and have to stay deployed before shooting. Impossible to be a moving marksman. Squads will form the way people want to play.

Believe it or not, I have seen actual useful and smart snipers playing. It pretty much is not the kits fault that we get lonewolves team killing from a distance; it is the players' fault.

You are playing on the wrong servers. If you call in air support you need some kind of comms with the pilot, via teamchat or better teamspeak or something like that.

Depending on the map the sniper can set up effectively to disrupt the enemy with his rifle. On desert maps he is obviously in the open and oftentimes easily identified, however on maps like Muttrah he can target HAT and AA on roofs, on maps like Barracuda he can operate pretty close to the enemy, like 300m and target hostiles and medics that are taking cover from attacking friendlies for example.

If you are a good sniper you can do major damage to the enemy team, I remember sniping on Korengal valley I had an enemy cache zeroed in and was awaiting my squad to destroy it while I managed to kill everyone defending it and they constantly came back to defend it so I continued to kill them giving the team plenty of Intel points. After that I spotted a few more caches by looking for pockets of defenders all without ever changing my location. If used in a proper roll as an observant an sniper can do great things, you should find a spot that you won't have to evacuate something secluded with allot of cover and escape routs.

On other maps such as AAS sniper is not as vital of a role but still can be useful to cause damage to the enemy tickets and be a scout.

People who know me will know that I hate snipers intensely. I feel that during pub games those who take the sniper kit add very little to the game, and are a waste of 2 guys that could make a proper squad. For the most part they are completely useless and my view is that there is no point to the sniper and that it should be removed from PR as it adds nothing to the game experience during 95% of public matches, other than frustration when someone in your squad takes it after you have expressely told them not too. Its just a shame that the vast majority of people who take the sniper kit have no clue on how to use it properly.

There are very few people who can use the sniper effectively and in the way it was meant to be used. I am fortunate enough to know a couple of them and can testify to their abilities and effectiveness whilst using the kit but the fact is that this is so rare in PR as to make it pointless.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "

Snipers could be used for support, for example, in kashan desert, a sniper can be used to deter and pinn down the enemy squad(s) from a distance, while your or another friendly squad prepeares to infiltrate the building/bunker, or in some cases flee the scene if they are about to get wiped out therefore saving friendlies.
Another role of a sniper can be like a marksman which is to increase the accurate fire range of a squad from 300m of riflemen to 600m as a sniper, or 4-500 as a marksman.

1. long distant teamkills. its sometimes amazing when you hop out of an support truck and being sniped right next to it by a blue guy.
2.its a good tool on insurgency maps when you want to empower the insurgent/taliban cause they rly can use a high accurate scoped rifle.

Well, they can be useful but the majority who take the kit are retards trying to be l337 ninjas and give it a bad rep. Sometimes I do wonder why the kit is still in the game, but overall it can be very useful when a decent player gets it.

I'm sorry, the sniper is amazingly useful for Recon and Laser Targeting. Simple as that.

I hate the people who take the kit with out your permission, What the hell are we going to do if we run into a APC and we cant get a AT kit because they have selfishly used up the squad’s heavy weapons cap soly so they can role play robin hood or some thing.
