Why .Net 3.5?
Why do I have to install .Net Framework 3.5 for 0.86? Does 3.5 make the game performance better or what? The problem is that I can't get it working...

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
My guess that it has something to do with the new menu.
And my other guess that it's causing pr.exe error to tens of people, including me.
24H so far and can't get this thing to work.

Dot net 3.5 causing files to lose security : 3.5 framework, database, security, database locks
and alot of other things concerning ms dot net and other sofware installs... just look around
its really surprising how people still use that microsoft shit in their applications and others dont mind

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
Because it depends on the libraries in .NET 3.5 to run.

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
.NET 2.0 is required for the pr.exe
and they just put .NET 3.5 SP1 to the installer cause its install all the other versions with service packs etc.
the pr.exe, what I know so far, just replace the BF2 splash screen with the PR one and delete some cache file for the news ticker in the menu, that you get the updated every restart

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
None. .NET has a lot of FUD spread against it from anti-Microsoft camps and a lot of information out there regarding vulnerabilities are out-dated or have been patched. But like anything else, the negative stories persist because the positive stories of fixes aren't top news stories.buckie33 wrote:ya but how much malware is gonna get into my computer?

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
.NET is used because it provides a very simple library that is crossplatform for all of Microsofts operating systems. Otherwise you have to code a different set of values for every different OS, and the potential for problems is far greater.
There is no conspiracy. Get .NET 3.5 and upgrade it to SP1. And thats you bang up to date with it. So many programs rely on .NET these days that its amazing that people don't have it installed already. I would say that it is the future of programing on windows, but that would be slightly untrue. Its the present of programming on windows ... its just the public have to catch up.

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
As a professional .NET developer for 2 years I can tell you that it is not some malware that MS is trying to push on people. It is MS's current and best development enviroment/virtual machine/code library and while it is a hassle for the users to install, it can reduce development time compared to traditional c++ MS MFC by a tremendous amount by eliminating the differences between versions of windows. Thus letting developers bring better software in less time to their customers. It is also very popular for web development with ASP.NET.
Its competitors include Java SE and Ruby on Rails to name a few. Java is really the only thing that comes close to providing a full development enviroment and even they do not supply the large collections of tools that MS has.
Please realize that .NET, while it might have some security flaws, is a step forward and is slowing making its way to being deployed ubiquitously on Windows machines.

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
I do know what it is and i already developed some Apps with it, but after reading the link above your post, i am quite stoked. The point is that microsoft silently adds unwanted functionality to my system just by installing an update.Solid Knight wrote:It's just a developer's framework, guys.
@twisted Helix: What coca said was what i wanted to know, what is .NET used for in 0.86, not why it is used in general. I should have expressed that more clearly in my first post.

Re: Why .Net 3.5?
1. ATI Users are used to .Net because the Catalyst Control panel needs .Net 2.0 to run
2. Nvidia Users often don't have it installed
3. "Sneaking" that . Net Add-On into Firefox is a big middlefinger - luckily i'm checking in what "my" FF does
4. .Net Framework might be nice for Devs but it blows up stuff and gave a lotta people really hard times to get their patched PR to run - most was helped by downloading the "offline" .Net3.5SP1 from MS and installing it and then run the patch...
btw. if only .Net2 is needed i'd better would have had the pr update without .Net stuff in it, but yes i know even if you post in big red letters that you have to install it some wouldn't
5. whether pr mod should go web2.0 should be discussed openly in my opinion

as a professional ms/linux coder and server admin all I can say .net was always a crutch for ppl lazy to make their own stuff and work a bit more
and your argument about "you wonder why .net 3.5 is not installed on every single machine because so many beautiful programs run on it", silly madness, look at how many ppl have to install it, that means noone ever used applications with 3.5, nor did I

professional of 2 years, congratz, you still havent managed to understand that 3.5 is useless, and does have just the flaws and not the "best dev library used by everyone"...
1 and 2 did their small job but 3 and 3.5 are nothing

Anyone who claims to be an MS developer will have .NET 3.5 on their system, so you are obviously not. Its used in the vast majority of business software and increasingly in Games.and your argument about "you wonder why .net 3.5 is not installed on every single machine because so many beautiful programs run on it", silly madness, look at how many ppl have to install it, that means noone ever used applications with 3.5, nor did I
The Gamebryo engine for example has C# as its scripting language.
The reason for using .NET 3.5 and NOT using 2.0 would be known to anyone who has any experience of it and its behaviour crossplatform. So we can surmise from that , that your experience with it is very very limited indeed.
