Name tags need to go bye, bye. Make the minimap smaller and less distracting, but don't take it away. We need it.

It's small enough as it is at the moment. If anything, make it better. Name tags are fine with friendlies, it should work like it does when you're looking at a friendly for a distance. As I always say, squad icons need to stay. If futuristic comms methods were made like BF2 represents (the super cool map and the super cool radios) then at least have a super cool way to identify your close squad mates. I like knowing where my squad leader is at all times, it helps me stick close to him.

Would there be a way to have it so that the mini-map only comes up by pressing and holding down a button (Like when checking team scores by pressing the Tab button). This way, it doesn't take up the whole screen, but it is not always there either. It would be sort of realistic, like you are pulling your map up to look at it and when you are done with it, it's out of sight and tucked back into a "pocket".

As far as tags go, maybe just close team/squad mates should be identified within a certain distance. Anything outside that distance means you have to get closer to id it.

As far as being able to see friendly squads/players on the map, that should only be for the commander & squad leaders.

The minimap has to stay in a fashion so when someone spots something, you know where it's at. Sure you can leave the compass, but I guess the map itself should be blank.

I mean if I see enemy tank spotted, and I'm in the street, I don't know which way to run or hide. Sure you can say people can say "yo guy in this building in this direction." But that gets to be a problem when you have multiple opponents or people that don't have mics/tooshy to use mics.

The problem with the minimap is its to big, there's no need for the chunky border and the flag cap icons (bit attached to the underside of the minimap I would move elsewhere.)

How can anyone for a Reality mod argue for keeping the minimap?????

Get rid of this ridiculous thing. It is absolutely anti-realism. Seriously.

Please, go back to Quake will ya?

Get rid of the friendlies on minimap but for UAV enemies should show up, if you want that "extra" realism then there is the option to make the map transparent :p its hard enough as it is to see friendly name tags at distance so making it hard to see them will be ****.

Here's my thoughts on the whole situation:

Nametags appear within a close proximity (15 meters) as well as when your crosshairs go over a teammate.

Get rid of the minimap, just keep the regular map.

I like having the friendly nametags but long names and night maps can make them very distracting and confusing. Is there a way to make them look like the JointOps nametag where there is a skinny "I" and just a skinny blue "I" on top of friendlies as a secondary option for displaying playertags? Then the squadmates can have green "I's" on top of their head. I think that minimalistic approach would work best as well as keep the nametags from becoming too distracting.

I would like to see name tags completely removed unless your cross hairs are over the person, so many times I haven been able to see the enemy because my team mates name tag is in the way.

The minimap have to stay!
It is extreme essential for orientation. I can have a look on the map and see, where my buddies (real life friends) and squadmembers are, where my squad is needed on the map and so on.
You just can't organize the hole thing like in reality because you have much less orientation when staring on a monitor compared to real life. Also the avatars all look the same (class dependend) and you can't recognize your friends and squadmembers easily. Mainly PRMM should stay a game and should not be too frustrating.
I think nobody want's pure battlefield reality, want you? Sitting 6 weeks in a camp wating for "action"? Or standing at a guard-house for 24h? Maybe some reality freaks should watch the film "Jarhead" <-- thats reality!
Also the association of heroic battlefield action is very "romantic" and very unrealistic.
So, please don't trade good and funny gaming experience with specious reality.

I see what happens without a minimap on "Red Orchestra". It is extreme chaotic when you play on public servers with your friends. Nobody knows where the others are and where you are needed. The bottom line is less tactics and more stupid sniper duels and flaghunting!!
This is for my opinion far away from reality!

And for reality:
I think a minimap is not that unrealistic. It is a "simulation" for a well trained soldier in a well scouted squad with a high-tech information acquisition behind enemy lines. Also it corrects the disadvantages you experience when playing an avatar in a computer game.

Minimap = cybernetic implants. Might be good for Battlefield 2142 but not a reality mod in modern times. I like the idea someone suggested about the MAP key pulling up an image looking like a pocket map (with no real time icons on it). That gives reference of the area and thats it.

Yes..with one minor footnote if I may....that you must ALSO be at close proximity as well.

yes, i agree
very nice. irl you'd know your squad mates.. crosshairing each one of the 5 to talk directly would suck

minimap shouldnt go completely.. having the notion of north south west east is important in the game, as i dont know completely the maps!

What about a compass tool in its place...one that just points NSEW then?
