If your worried about the enemy hearing you, cant you all whisper? You wouldn't be shouting things in real life when your about to assault a building, and it would let the enemy know if there are careless troops that are about to assault.

no, because whatever is volume of your voice enemy still hear you and mumble cant simulate obstacles for sound, like walls, bushes etc.

I originally thought mumble was exclusively a positional audio app. When I found out you could communicate across the entire channel I wasn't that dismayed, until I joined a server and was amazed at how many people were chatting during the SQ initiation faze. Please take away the FC ability until it can be sorted. You guys have created something really special here and I think, for now, the FC should be disabled due in part to the vast minority of R-Tards!

I wish I had a clue how to tinker with applications like you guys are doing. Fantastic job!

Mumble does require Extremely well admined channels, like when we had iGi mumble nights. Part of the reason iGi were only enforcing mumble on those nights was that iGi could guarentee admins would be on.

what i've been wanting to see in mumble is some sort of adaptive voice volume, i.e. when you whisper your voice can only be heard from a short distance and when you scream or talk loudly you can be heard from a longer range. It would make playing so much easier, now if you want to talk to someome who stands 80 m away you can scream all you want and still not make any contact. If your voice would instead get a longer range when you yell we could have much more realistic use of mumble. Same goes for if the enemy is near, you wouldn't want your whispers to be fully hearable from 50 metres away, so you whisper in a low voice and the range goes down to maybe 20 m maximum.

For this to work and not having people with ill-adjusted mics be heard over the entire map there will need to be some sort of sound wizard and adapting process before you start playing, to make sure Your whispers are recognized as whispers and Your yells are recognized as such. It would also be nice to have some sort of visual representation of what level your voice is on whilst in-game, in case you need to reposition your mic etc.

Nah mate, this is not really possible without a clear input signal, which some people don't get by using bad mics or having bad luck with their sound-device, which produces veery loud noise, much louder then the whispering is.

I think Mumble ok the way it is right now, but talking about the PR-only mumble (which you can not configure yourself) we can get rid of it/only allow in SL marked channels.

i like Carlez 1's idea for the adaptive volume/distance but i think you would have to have a default distance setting as the adaptive setting could be quite cpu intensive seeing as my cpu uses a hamster with a calculator :D

and in the absence of a commander, a squadleaders meeting at the very beginning of the round before everyone rushes off to the four corners of the map sounds like a good idea which mumble suits.

Maybe BF2 VOIP can be disabled, FC can be disabled, team chat can be disabled and we will be forced to send runners to communicate between squads. :)

Turn of all but mumble and squadleaderchannel. LOL

Today armies have radios. And you can't send a runner up to the cobra saying that you are lasering A6 kp 9.

It would work with squad leader channel though. That would be epic :)

I agree Cougar, people are scared of using force centre as it gives away your plans, which i can understand completely. However, i still think that positional should be used, but just refrain from going into too much detail in your plan?

Were u there when vBF2 voip didn't work during the Stress Testing session? Was epic....

Though when squads came together it was a bit chaotic..but people were probably just struck by the awesomeness.

you can talk to people next to you without the rest of the server hearing

quality is also higher

The PR specific mumble is found at http://www.imgoingin.co.uk/mumble

ON A SIDE NOTE, could the PR website bods setup http://www.realitymod.com/mumble? which would send you to the correct thread?

I mean, I can't really put "www.imgoingin.co.uk/mumble" on clan servers since that would be disrespectful

-No, Mumble has positional audio which means you broadcast to people within a certain distance of yourself. Basically, it works like talking does in real life.

Yes the latest version (0.5) will be released in the next few days hopefully, and the PR Mumble server will be back up.

well, you don't "Need" to, but if you don't you'll have to mess around with the settings of the vanilla mumble to make it work.

mumble does actually work with a number of other games, such as COD4, and PR mumble might not work very well for them.

all I'm missing in mumble is a channel where I will not hear not a single dumb "me first" or "gimme gimme" kid yelling at my ear, if he's not less then 70m away, is that too much to ask?
If you're making a new server, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaAaAAaAAAaaassssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee make a channel and name it "DIE_GLOBAL_MOFOS_AND_OTHER_MUMBLE_HATERS", and kill (in real life) every single guy who says anything global in that channel.
Or, you can make a "server" (not corresponding to any real server in game), so that people who like mumble and hate TS can meet, kill and yell at each other in a positional fashion only.

<random thought="slightly ot">
i wonder now, if two people were to be in the same mumble channel but not in the same pr server, since mumble only transmits the positional information from the game wouldn't the two hear eachother as invisible ghosts if they go to the same place at the same time? :S

I think I can answer that actually, but I'm not entirely sure.

If the map ur on is the same size as the other person positional still works, but if the map is a different size, then it treats them as if they aren't ingame.
