[loading screens] Server info box larger

Post by Rudd »

Its very hard to commuicate all of a server's rules if it has a few. Yes you can link to a webpage with the rules, or have messages ingame to tell players the rules.

Now, people can't be arsed to read the rules on a website, and the rules ingame goes AGAINST the pr tradition of making the HUD less obvious. Especially when servers insist on BIG ANGRY ORANGE LETTERS.

If the server message section was bigger, there would be room for the server rules to be explained as well as there being room for any extra info.

If the loading screen pictures have to sacrifice some room, then so be it, at the end of the day they are aesthetics and you only see them when loading :)

/supported

I hate all these scrolling rules clogging up my screen, would be far simpler to have them on map load.

The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "

Yeah those Orange letters are scary

i support this too.

Its good to know what the rules are BEFORE you join the server and not AFTER(You crashed the A-10 on the runway :razz :)

No point, the welcome message has ~200 (give or take a bit) character limit from what I've seen when configuring the GSA - BigD Servers. You could make the box the entire loading screen, but you could only write up about 200 characters until it cut you off... (Limit is hardcoded)

You have 7 lines, use it well, you can get more than enough info over if you word things carefully.

If you have to link to an external website, so be it. If people don't read the rules, it's their fault? Your admins can hand out the punishment, and if they didn't know, well that's no argument because you can just respond saying it's in your rules webpage which was linked?

-Why? Why would they do that? It just boggles the mind...

Probably because the old vanilla layout didn't have that much space, and longer limits increase download time for the users (as minimal as it is due to plain text)...

But there is only one server variable? sv.welcomeMessage? Not sure how your thinking 2 boxes would work...

Just did a bit of testing, it's a 257 character limit, and if you have too much text (tried 1000 characters :p ), the server just doesn't start :|

You can have different text though with the 2 text variables. sv.welcomeMessage is on the loading screen, and sv.sponsorText is on the detailed server info popup in the server browser (can't have both on the one menu, it's locked to welcomeMessage being on the loading menu, and sponsorText being on the main menu). So if you really wanted, you could use that to your advantage, but again, not much point since not many people read those messages :p .

AM, i hate to nit-pick... but do you really think so?

i read them. i got this same problem with people in the past where they assume that nobody reads the message of the day. its just not true, and a little unfair to presume. I would rather be able to read the server rules on the message of the day than have console spam within the round.

I like the layout of the loading screen atm, showing the rest of the rules in-game is fine, it has enough space there to show you the main rules, so i dont see a problem.
