The Best of First-Person Tactical Wargaming
I've published a fairly comprehensive article on the best features of first-person tactical/wargaming. Considering that this is a forum for a realism mod, I figured some of you might find it interesting. It's 22,000+ words, with tons of screens, pictures, and video to illustrate the various topics.
You can find the article here.
Feedback is of course appreciated. I hope you guys enjoy it.

I didn't cover maps in this particular article. I might cover that in the next one (as I do plan to do a followup eventually), however. There are a lot of good things that I didn't touch on - I tried to restrict myself to the most basic elements, things that apply to most games (moving, shooting, interacting with the gameworld).'[R-DEV wrote:Rhino']was there anything you did about FPS maps? I only has a quick flick through but i would be intrested to read about what you wrote about maps if you did![]()
Nice idea, I hadn't thought of that.'[R-Con wrote:matt.b']Make sure to post this in the fora of pro game design sites too (gamasutra etc) & hopefully you'll inspire someone in the biz.

Awesome. I love your ideas on viewing and free look - sorta like the CoD3 trailer, but a little less OTT. I'd love a mix of BiA, CoD2, AA, and OPF, all those styles combined would make for an immersive experience.
Unfortunately a lot of these ideas are impossible with the BF2 engine - we're stuck with what we've got, really. I'd love to see, after we've done with Bf2, a move to another engine such as Source, which allows nigh on anything to be done.
As far as "True First Person" is, totally agree. To be able to look down and check your wounds would be excellent. But again, not possible in BF2.

I'm not sure why they STARTED on this engine lol'[R-PUB wrote:Fullforce'] I'd love to see, after we've done with Bf2, a move to another engine such as Source, which allows nigh on anything to be done.
But very interesting read, in particluar the comments about the sights, though mainly the ones that require lob to be taken into account.
Trying to learn the M203 recently has been a pain in the A***

I think you just wanted to show off your AR-15
Great article I too am a HUGE fan of OFP, friends always comment on the crappy graphics but I'm quick to name several 'great looking' shooters that lack in everything but graphics.
This article should be read by any developers that want to put the world 'real' anywhere into their game description.
