Grenadier: An forgotten goldie?

Post by Rawhide »

Me and a few friends of mine all agree that the Grenadier kit is one of the best infantry kits in PR. But, we also all agree that we see a lot of other players on public servers not using this beautiful kit.

Why is that? Is it just us or is a lot of people not seeing the real power of the G-kit?

I'd much rather have frag grenades than a grenade launcher, cause the launcher is basically useless for CQB.

Plus I'd rather aim and hit someone with my rifle at range than take a chance and maybe be off by 10 feet with the GL and then get shot.

At least when I miss with my rifle it's not by that much and it's suppressing them.

Not if you practice with the Grenadier to the point where its actually useful ;)

^^^True but I still find the loss of frag grenades a massive disadvantage.

I have the same problem, not that good with the Grenadier kit and I don't want to waste the kit by trying to figure out how to use it effectively in a squad, I'll stick to the scoped rifles.

But I agree, it is underused and in the right hands, it's pretty devestating.

The gL is also a great suppressing weapon even if you miss, the suppression area on those things is huge

Honestly the GL should be spawnable and the MG requestable for 5+ man squads

but thats just my opinion...

Spawnable GL kit would have the exact opposite effect, would turn into COD4 with all those grenades going off.

Not many people know how to aim it correctly, plus when I'm squad leading I usuallydont have anyone grab it because it doesn't do anything useful that other kits can't already do. If I knew someone who was good with the kit then I would have em grab it

well they dont need to be amazing to supress the side of a buliding with enemies in it

most of the time the GL is used on a covered target, usually large, if you just hit the side of the wall you will supress the enemy,

for targets in the open just use the gun

its quite useful against all these "super MGs" every one has been complaining about, especially with the smoke

When I ask for volunteers for Grenadier I get blank stares and mutterings of "I'm **** with that kit"

Its a really powerful kit.

(my idea squad is - SL, Medic, Rifleman, LAT, LMG and X; X= Grenadier/marksman/Rifleman)

SLs are often unwilling to provide good rangefinding for their grenadiers.

I'd like to see some kind of rangefinder built into the binoculars. Soldiers are trained to estimate RL ranges, but that training doesn't convert to BF2-metric well.

It works great when you're providing support to other troops and supressing from long range. But it's quite useless in an attacking element (at least in PR).

Sometimes the attack marker is on something more important than what the Grenadier is currently trying to shoot at. ALso, I do actually dislike it when a Grenadier in my squad fires all his grenades off before we get to the situation where they would actually be useful (e.g. enemy behind cover)

This is kinda one of the reasons I'd like the ingame attack marker to live only on our maps rather than in the 3d world, since it is kinda unrealistic and gamey. I can actually hit things without attack markers up to 200m, its a matter of practice, like anything in PR.

It is probably because it is hard to use, difficult to aim with :D

I LOVE the grenadier kit, I'm pretty good with it, doesn't take long to calculate the range (most of the time you use the top 2 boxes on the Grenadier Crosshair) After that it's easy going. If you want you can use the smoke grenades to get a good bearing on where you want to hit.

I too find that the Grenade Launcher is being underused.
When I use it, its like a mortar.

Its also very useful in Operation Baracuuduuabca when you are PLA. Very good taking out enemy hostiles when they land on the beach.

I agree, the Grenadier kit can be amazingly powerful in a squad. The problem is, it takes a lot of time to master and since it comes from the supply crate, almost every instance where I would want the kit I usually don't have it. It's simply too situational to be useful all the time, but man, it really is an incredibly kit.

The ability to have a huge insta-smoke field is incredibly useful for SLs, but I think its underused and under appreciated.

Honestly the biggest problem I see is SLs treating their grenadier as just another rifleman instead of using his unique abilities to win the fight. For example: "Grenadier, launch smoke on the left flank, then use your grenades to suppress that SAW gunner behind those crates... meanwhile our SAW gunner will move to a covering position while our rifles flank and kill the enemy in that covered position"

The Grenadier kit isn't all that great for suppression, sure, the grenades suppress quite well, but you don't get that many grenades.

the major advantage of people not wanting to take the time to get good with the GL kit is that its almost always available from the crates. I hardly ever see all the GL kits taken.

Im pretty good with the kit and I dont really think it takes THAT long to get good with it. Also you get alot of grenades so even when you miss its pretty easy to adjust your fire and hit the target.

Its a very versatile kit. You still have your scoped rifle, but you also basically have a portable mortar.
-you can hit enemies hiding behind walls, or behind cover. the splash damage is pretty big you dont need a direct hit. its great for attacking 50cal emplacement and AR gunners too.
-you can lay down an impressive wall of smoke, and you can smoke out areas much further away than the thrown smoke grenades. this is great if you have to traverse a large open area.
-you can blind your enemies with smoke too. since you can shoot it so far, you can actually shoot it at their position. now they cant see you they cant shoot at you, this forces them to either flee or try to get out of the smoke to shoot at you which exposes them.

the lack of frag grenades is really not a big deal to me. afterall, it cant be a super kit. if you are in an even slightly competent squad than there will most likely be atleast 2-3 other guys who can throw frags. every kit has its strengths and weaknesses. the scoped riflemen kits arent that great at CQB, the ironsight riflemen arent that great at long range fighting and the grenadier can blow stuff up at a distance but not so much up close.
