Your signature is way too big.
And believe me, the Devs - who say it's impossible - do know what they're talking about. And - from my limited knowledge - it is impossible because there is no such thing in the game; you can only modify things, not add new elemets. You might add a new tank or a new helicopter, but they'll never be able to have more than eight seats for example.

It's so hilarious. Awesome.
I have just one question to all of you fast rope fanatics. I bet you all have seen the movie Black Hawk Down (yes the one with the very talented Josh Hartnett). Now you also might know what the whole movie was about. Yes - exaclty - it was about a friggin huge battle caused by - you won't believe - fast ropes!
The irony. Your beloved fast roping is the whole reason for the movie BHD. Now every sane human being would think about the negative aspects of fast roping and maybe also about the time/use ratio. The ratio is not just 0 it is even a negative value. maybe of -100%.
So please please really try to think about it and you'll find out how worthless all that really is. Thxkbai.

it was more than a movie remember...Your beloved fast roping is the whole reason for the movie BHD
but yeah, mostly fast ropes would be completely unnecessary. However, if coupled with collision meshes for the chopper's rotors it would become rather important. And it would open strategic options up, e.g. on Barracuda you could rope in to the trees instead of the pilot having to risk clipping or unsteady terrain.
it would just be plain fun anyway.
We'll see how it goes, but most likely the discussion is indeed in vain.

Aww.... ME 2
I just asked
FOR
THE
REASON !
I didn't get it, did I ???
so imo you're all in the 1st half of guys I mentioned before:
I know how you have to work with the BF2-engine: use existing presets and change or "modify" 'em. That's clear...
But I just want to affirm that you don't understand what I was talking about !
I only wanted to get a good explanation where that so called "hardcode" problem is, so it would make me stop all the efforts I've done so far to get such a rope working.
I'm afraid that I reacted quite rude but I don't see any other way of answering to these -see quote- type of forum users.

Its hardcoded, so it cant be made without the source code.
But PR wont get the source code from DICE........ until the DEVs take over their company!
Atleast i think thats the reason.

I do not know how exactly the engine works, sadly. But I do know that there is nothing that might be used as a variable for fastropes.
If you wan't me to give you a piece of code and say "here is the problem", I can't. I doubt the Dev's can, either.
See: There are no such things in existing vehicles. The only way to get out of a vehicle in BF2 is by pressing E and then spawning next to it. Hence no fastropes - as long as you're attached to a vehicle (in a vehicle), as we all know, you can't move; the exception being ladders and ropes (if you see them as vehicles in this sense). The problem is: One object can not be a helicopter, in which you can't move around (unless you stand in/on top of it without pressing E) and have a rope - and even if it could, you'd still spawn outside of the vehicle when exiting - and, for example if you use the Merlin helicopter, which is enterable, how would the game know if you want to re-enter the heli or rather enter the rope when pressing E? They are too close to eachother. But that's not even it, you simply can not attach a rope to a helicopter in the engine (and you'd also have to make it so the rope can be pulled up and down, too, even more difficult). There is no such thing in the engine. There is no variable you could modify there. It's simply a completely new thing that people want.
There is one rather well known work-around, though: In the Merlin helicopter, you can enter without pressing E by just jumping in it. Then, if the pilot is careful, he can start and a Rifleman Specialist in the helicopter can throw a rope out of it so it's stuck to it - but that takes MUCH time, very good coordination, an almost completely motionless helicopter and it makes you a damn easy target.
I can't give you a file, point at it and say "Here it says 'fastropes can't be done'", but I can say what I know about the engine after playing on it for years and reading these forums for a very long time, always hearing the same suggestions and the answers from the Dev's.
I don't know how you would code a rope if you could, but I know that you can't.
Until now, I was mostly right when judging if a new suggestion is possible or not. I can't code, but I know this engine. I just can't give you numbers or something.

By hardcoded, there is no code like:Priby wrote:Its hardcoded, so it cant be made without the source code.

Code: Select all
ObjectTemplate.FastropesEnabled 0Which isn't that much
As to the question in the OP, I have to say... I'm 90% sure that Fastropes will be coded using the BF2 engine before PR 0.9 is released.

by 90% you mean you have faith in another person's hunch on how to do it. bit of an exaggeration dont ya think mate? wait till sniper actually gets 50% there before your 90% its gonna happen. in any case, im not really in support of the whole fast ropes thing because 2 days into it's launch it would be renamed by every noob and self-proclaimed game critic as failropesMcLuv wrote:By hardcoded, there is no code like:
That you can simply switch to 1, but actually coding a system that works, looks, and feels like fastropes is most likely entire codable, it would just require about 100 extra lines of code per chopper...Code: Select all
ObjectTemplate.FastropesEnabled 0
Which isn't that much

Wouldn't it be possible to code? If a user presses E, and he is in this vehicle, then spawn him holding a rope or grapple hook? I think it would be possible with python and replacing one event with another.

Considering there has been 3 mods that I know of trying everything under the sun for 5 (that's FIVE!!!) years without success I won't be holding my breath. But yes, I'm sure you've thought of something new...

Wow, this thread is getting trolled hard. Maybe we should stop with the speculation and arguing over this old meme until sniper(?) posts what his theory/WIP is all about?

Oh, @j0g32
I just realized you're actually modding BF2. I take back the rude-ness from my side, you probably know better than me. I still think it's impossible, though.

The wise McLuv once said that fastropes aren't hardcoded they would just be a b*tch to code.
