crashing on windows xp. please help

Post by hitm@n[2/3] »

hey

I love PR and play quite a bit. However, I crash to desktop right before the 3rd (or sometimes 4th) map is loaded. What I mean is, ill play or 3 games of PR and I crash in the middle of the server loading the 4th map. I also occasionally crash to desktop in the middle of a game. I run windows xp with 3gb of ram and a 2.4 ghz quad core intel processor.

help is much appreciated

thanks,

Two things you could try

Running out of memory
'[R-DEV wrote:AncientMan;913997']The most common cause of this is that you are running out of memory.
BF2 was a memory intensive game, and PR only increases on that.

First, you can try lowering your video settings, in particular, Textures. If that doesn't help or fix your issue,
you can try increasing your virtual memory. Information on how to do this is located in the Installation Guide wiki.
See HERE.

If that STILL doesn't work, you can try patching your bf2.exe to allow it to use more than 2GB of memory.
Firstly, you want to backup your current bf2.exe in your /Battlefield 2/ folder. To do this, simply rename it from bf2.exe
to bf2.exe.original. You should back it up incase you have any issues in the future. Now you need to download the patched bf2.exe.
This can be found in THIS zip file
(THIS one if your using the EA Downloader version)
(If you get a virus warning, ignore it, just a false positive). Simply extract it next to bf2.exe.original, and your good to go.
Thanks to R.J.Travis for the original method.
Mutli core/processor causing errors
If you have more than one cpu or 'core' you can set the 'affinity'(force the game to run on one cpu or core only) through your shortcut by adding
AFFINITY 2
to your shortcuts 'target' string like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\PR\PR.exe" start /AFFINITY 2 +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

Good luck

the shortcut you posted finally makes PR load up for me, but I get the, "you need to run it with pr.exe" message. When I change the target to

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start/AFFINITY 2 +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

The game doesn't load up at all. Doesn't show a black screen then crashes, nothing, just stays on the desktop. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've already redownloaded and reinstalled everything, still no luck. Is it an issue with my shortcut target?

maybe the resolution you are trying to run it at as standard.

Either go into vBF2 and fix it there or add your resolution to your shortcut, with +szx 1920 +szy 1200 [delete and add your res at that is mine]

Hope that helps

Your shortcut looks like it should work. Check your 'start in' window and make sure it points to the same BF2. The other thing you could check is the refresh rate for your monitor, If you have a LED it should be set at 60Mz or less. Look in your BF2 folder inside your documents folder. Inside that find 'profiles', then video. You can open the file 'video' with a text editing app. just change the refresh rate to 60. You can also just make a new shortcut. Then adjust the target again.
Good luck

Check and make sure you have ONE space and only one space after
PR.exe"

You installed BF2
Updated with 1.41
Installed PR with PR86 core installer followed by 86 levels installer
Used default location on 'C' drive.

I don't know why but using the 86 patch didn't work for me.
The game would start to load then in a blink I would be back on the desktop.
I uninstalled PR86, deleted the PR shortcut and the PR folder left inside EA\BF2 folder then
rebooted, reinstalled with both of the full installers (core & levels)and then thankfully everything worked.

Hope it helps

i tried that after you suggested, but it didn't help. The ONLY way i can even get PR to start is to have the target pointing to bf2.exe OR start BF2 and go to community/custom games then select PR. The only problem is that doing it those ways, i'm stuck with the pr.exe message. Like I said, clicking the shortcut or even the .exe itself does nothing. I've tried all I can think of and nothing's worked, guess I'll have to hope .9 works.

Post your Battlefield 2 directory here , and then look in your registry (StartMenu>>Run and type in "regedit"). Find where your battlefield 2 key is and tell me that location.

Tell me where your profiles directory is as well, and finally tell me what system OS you are running and whether your BF2 install is from disk or EA downloader please.

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 that's the bf2 directory

i can't seem to find the key, but where the bf2 stuff is: hkey_local_machine/software/electronic arts/ea games/battlefield 2

C:\Documents and Settings\(my name)\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles

it was installed from the disk. I'm running windows xp SP3
I hope that's what you needed.

Yes , thats all perfectly normal. You shouldn't be experiencing any problems with that directory structure.

So it must be something else. Did your .NET install fine ?
