You can have a good ping (response time for packets) but have a bad connection between you and the game server dropping packets. The packets that get though will give you a good ping but the dropped packets will cause the game to stutter as it clears up the missing data.

Alternately you can be maxing out your video or system ram while infantry (where all the detail is) and running smooth in the chopper in the air since you don't see as much detail.

NO!!!!!!!!!
I have 2 PCs connected to 1 modem. The one i play on is the 2nd one. Then the 1st one starts downloading my ping goes waaaaay up and i even have a screeny of my crazy ping. It's harder to play but still possible. TTP kicks for high pings but TG doesn't and I love TG for that

This game uses dedicated servers. So logically speaking, ping has hardly any effect at all on the game. Peer to peer on the other hand is greatly effected by ping.

EDIT:

Lag is only caused by a slow or faulty internet connection. If you are experiencing FPS slow down it is your system that needs upgrading, or you need to turn your settings down.

Or by isssues on the server, like overload or not enough bandwidth.

I voted no. I get on average 180 ping on European servers. So 200 is a little low to be kicking.

I think closer to 250 - 275+ is a reasonable ping to consider kicking. That's just me though.

I don't know about you guys but doesn't lag for me at all even when I have 200 ping on some servers.

Any foreign server I play on is over 200 ping and I play fine, I'm actually somewhat impressed how the BF2 net code compensates relative to other games.

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of those who voted yes never have to play on servers higher than 200 ping themselves.

A significant amount of people probably don't understand much about pings, like the Americans who tell me to stop downloading when they see mine.

i voted yes , just for the sake of the experience i got in a server with all under 150ping comparable to the servers with the mix of 50 to 350 and beyond.....

There should be a all server rule that servers shouldnt ping kick. When your connection goes bad for 2 seconds and then gets better you get kicked. There are only a few servers without ping kick.Which makes Pr pretty unplayable for me.There should be a common servers rule for no ping kick.

[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:ppl think ping effect servers etc back from the quake days / CS where every one had a 56k and then ping did effect servers / other players.

These days with DSL etc ping has hardly any effect on any other players or on the server. The only player to lag from his ping will be him self, due to the net code, every player dose not need to rely on the info every player is sending, they rely on what the server is telling them, and the server will tell them where it thinks the player is, and if the player aint updating the server enough to tell it, the server will guess. why the only player who gets penalized for high ping, is the player with the high ping. You can play upto 300 ping with no real lag probs, beyond that you yourself will probaly start to feel the lag pretty badly. A game can easily be played with 120 ping, even 250ping. Above 250 it dose start to get bad thou.

Really what needs to change is the players frame of mind, yes lower ping is better, but not essential.
[R-DEV]IronTaxi wrote:agreed...i always play over 200 as i live in japan....only on the jap servers do i get anything lower...

its a total old wives tale...not an ounce of meaning in it at all...the worst that happens is i lag..(cause im not getting packets fast enough) everyone else just goes on their merry way....

Agreed with that on BF2 and a lot of Online games with fixed net code. However other games, such as CSS and TF2 can have adverse effects due to ping, but that is still client side, not server side, where its basically impossible to hit a lagging player.

Granted, a 500 ping in Pr will not be playable at all, and almost impossible for you to hit them, but noone would put up with that for long ;)

It is still a problem but not in BF2 based games. In the Call of Duty series for example it's still a problem because it's based on the Quake 3 engine. There is absolutely no reason for kicking high pingers.

I agree, I see guys with a 40 on our server lagging, in fact one night I was in a tank with one and it drove me nuts, I suspect he was lagging due to his sound card drivers, as we would lag out when I fired the top gun, but I have also been a gunner for UK guys that were hitting 150 or above and ran as smooth as can be.

my ping spikes varying from 400-700 ms from around 6pm till 10-11pm (Isp peak times) and when i go on a server with out a pint limit I play with little lag.
