Windows 7 64-bit+PR=Lag?

Post by mrsniper »

I recently installed PR on my partition with Windows 7 RC1, and PR runs brutally slow on it for some reason. Even with all the settings on low, i will randomly drop to 5 fps for about 10 seconds. In Vanilla, everything is smooth with the highest settings, even when flying, etc. I have found when there is a lot of shooting, talking, etc. that I will crash as I am lagging out. Anyone else have similar problems or solutions?

Right I forgot to mention I have a Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme gamer, and onboard sound for my motherboard. I am using the X-FI when I am in Windows. when i try using my onboard sound, however, I can't use or hear anyone with VOIP for some reason. The slider will not move from 0.

Hmm it seems to be a global problem now with my soundcard/motherboard in W7. I think i need to format to fix it anyway. Thanks for the help :D

you shouldn't use soundcard AND onboard, that could be the reason for instability..
disable onboard in bios and only use soundcard

Not at all true, as im running both and have been successfully for many years now.

Try a fresh install, and make sure you update all your drivers.

Don't bother re-formatting unless you are seriously non-functional in almost complete terms.

You definitely have out of date drivers. Though some HD soundcards do have some resource issues with X-fi / secondary soundcards. Depending on your mobo.
If you don't need the MB sound, disable it, as you should with any unnecessary mb devices.

The almost complete and total lockup i have seen with driver issues alone, especially sound-drivers, so if you are planning on yanking your PCI-E mobo daughtercard, or prior to disabling it. Make sure you uninstall your mobo sound and use a driver cleaner that you trust.

X-fi have some fully certified drivers now for Win7 x-fi so go and grab those too if you are running the beta drivers, which are alright, but not perfect.

If other FPS games give you similar problems then you are looking at drivers. I would make a point to review all your drivers on a monthly basis at least when running RC operating systems.

By the end it turned into a global problem where sound from certain sources would cause my PC to completely lag (mainly from games). I am dling PR right now and should be able to test it again tomorrow. I've never had problems with my onboard sound giving me problems before, but I mainly keep it active as my X-FI doesn't work very well with my Linux dualboot.

Thanks for the help everyone.

There are fresh (relatively) drivers for XFI on the Creative's site - from mid June or there a bouts.
No problems here with xfi+onboard+win7x64+DFI-m2r+4850+Phenom710+4gbRAM

Darkpowders Win7 tip of the day 02.08.09 - Turn off Windows Defender as you should be running a superior spyware-program anyway. Win7 resource monitor shows it uses 25% of CPU time (visible under services section).

For those people testing Win7 more inexperienced than us, just doing a search for "Defender" in control panel will find what you needs, just switch it off from its own control panel.

Hey guyz i hope you could help me with this:
I have windows 7 with 64bit my specs are:

AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
8192MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

my problem is when I try play PR it works perfectly fine at the start but after playing for like 30-40 min i notice a fps drop from average 100 to like 50 then if i play any longer it just goes down to 25-12 and i have to restart my game that it would be normal again.
but strangely when i open Xfire in-game when its like 12 FPS, the game in the back ground runs back up to 100 FPS. I have no Idea whats wrong. My video drivers are updated.

give me any ideas you can think off thank you. ;-)

If you'd use a laptop I'd go with messed up power options (lowers CPU freqency etc).

Turn on Resource Manager when playing, then alt-tab into it to check the charts for suspicious signs.

Maybe windows is thinking the pc is idle and start to run some stupid tasks like defragging.

on a side note: you could have opened a new thread for that imo.
