Backlog of maps?

Post by SkaterCrush »

To me, it seems like .9 is gonna be the "big patch" (I mean, I hope CF is done, along with quite a few other faction mods). With the new factions, there will be more maps, and I feel the map rotation on some servers is already to long. Its especially bad in Australia, where GSA (Gaming South Australia) is basically the only server that is ever full, and it has a twenty something map rotation, so I have to go through quite a few crappy maps to get to a map that I really like. When ADF (Australian Defence Force) comes out, I'm not sure if I'm gonna be able to handle it, since I sincerely doubt they WON'T put in an ADF map. Now I generally have to play on an overseas server (pretty much always Chicago Hardcore/Insurgency...<3 insurgency hehe) and they are generally both full (at nighttime their side). Even at Insurgency I have to play through Karbala and other crappy maps(I play U.S. 95% of the time btw), till I get to Korengal and Op Archer. I know this sounds really stupid, but do you think it might be good to phase out some of the less liked maps so servers don't need to have stack maps up, they could just have a few good ones that everyone likes

thing is what you dont like others will

imagine someone posted similar to you saying they didn't like korengal or archer, please remove them.

al kufrah is getting cut in 0.9, i'd like that map, especially if it had the brits back with some armour warfare, but hey DEVs final decisions, failing that talk to the server admins to refine the maplist

NINJEDIT::: plus even having only the 'good' maps will get boring, i used to really enjoy playing muttrah (like really) but now getting slightly bored of it and enjoy it less hence would like other maps to play, as recently i've come to enjoy a round of quinling if there are enough people with the correct mind frame

The other problem is with servers always playing the popular maps, what happens is the popular maps easily become overplayed very quickly. I really enjoy many maps but I sometimes see maps like Muttrah getting played twice in one night on the same server... Once a night is more than enough for any map, any more and it just becomes overplayed too quickly.

EDIT: god damn Sars with his ninja edit button :p

I agree that some maps should be phased out, though I am really looking forward to the variety that we should have when 0.9 comes out.

My feeling atm though is that there are some maps that are simply not PR standard. Road to Kyongan 'Ni and Sunset City are easily the worst offenders, neither is very big and neither offer any kind of interesting gameplay or strategic freedom because they are so small and so little of the actual map area can be used. Moreover the level of detail on these maps is terrible and when compared to newer maps like Fallujah they simply pale in comparison.

So basically im hoping that as there should be so many maps coming in that we can start to remove some of the dross that still populates the maplist.

I hope 4km maps with skirmish 16 32 and 64 player modes will come soon..

And that it will be easier to acutally seed servers with large maps, that would be nice too.

Well the maps will be allright (after Rhino checked them personnally 8) ) I am just worried about the size of both the setup and the map files :S Because with all the content of all those community factions the size of the setup will be immense. Don't even get me started about the mapfile; if you count 3 maps a faction + all maps with the "standard" armies

Any idea how this is gonna be solved? Or is it just gonna be a big file...

Also some of the maps that are never played by servers just make the downloads even bigger. Worst offenders are Qinling and Tad Sae. Also Road to Kyon whatever ;) is falling out of favour aswel. To the person who started the post i hate archer but i know a lot of people love it so you have to see what everyone in the community thinks. In the same thread someone says Sunset isnt PR standard- yet i dont find it to bad. So it's a matter of taste but i do think Qinling and Tad Sae should probably go.

Hay I like Sunset city and Kyongan is ok. I just think server admins need to be open minded and choose a wider verity of maps. Ya and al kufrah was ok with the British and tanks, but it really got raped when they added the Americans :( America can't fix everything lol. I'm just really sad that most people won't play Russian maps, I really like Mesitia and Kozleck, and fools road is amazing. But people always empty out when the maps turn Russian. Seriously I'm tired of playing Americans 24/7 I miss playing as the British :(
Oh well at least we are getting a shit load of factions next update.
Oh yeah I'm sorry for going off topic, but I used to lag on BI Ming and Fools road when I use my scope, but the .86 patch fixed that problem on BI Ming. Can you guys do to fools road w/e you did to Bi Ming lol. Don't bother if its too much work :)

Quinling = awesome, Tad Sae = variety. I enjoy all of the current maps except Barracuda as Chinese (due to huey rocket spam killing people in tunnels not being fun or realistic).

Well i kind of agree. I think that Qinling is a great map so detailed and i just love to be the Brits. However if it's not used- which it isnt then it's probably time to get rid of it, especially if some people get lag on it. However i cant say Tad Sae does much for me i think its a less imaginative version of ghost train. Tad Sae not one of my fav maps ive gotta say.

I still like Sunset city - I remember when I first played PR, it really amazed me, and when I started mapping, I hoped to achieve the same level of quality and detail. When it runs on a server, I think alot of people still enjoy it, but maybe it is a little small now.

With the large number of high quality maps expected to be in 0.9, maybe a few of the unplayed maps can be taken out to lower the download size. I know that some mods, have separate map packs, so that is another option. (people complain about download sizes, but Im sure that 80 - 90% of players would download 2 large map packs. )

Although maps with similar styles (Kufrah/Kashan, TadSae/Ghost Train, Fool's Road/Quinling) might seem like they can be compared they really can't. Tad Sae has no real choke points except for supply trucks and is very free form in execution, Ghost Train has specific areas the river can be crossed. The flag capping works completely differently on the two maps and they care different sizes. Just because they both have trees and underbrush and are green doesn't mean they are similar.

I look forward to additional maps and I really think that having 'to many' maps is the way to go. Of course even the common maps have different layers that aren't used, and having the choice to play a new layer can only improve PR. I'd like to see a armor version of Kashan without air assets, maybe we just need a new 4km map with a ground based focus.

Some of the maps like Sunset City have an implementation issue instead of a real flaw issue. Old maps that could be dropped since they don't fit the current game play are Sunset City (just too small of a scale now, too much of the 1k map is unimportant or not conductive to flanking due to terrain) and the river map with the castle and outpost. Both fit an earlier play style that is just past, Sunset City would still work as a Skirmish map but does not as a full server map with a single flag that does not cause bleed.
