hehe - to be fair to snoogums, I know he has used mumble and knows it capabilities, so he isn't one of the guys who refuses to even try it.
I think that he is just making the point that its not that good - but that his opinion which is fair enough

Well actually Wicca, thats not quite true, but thats really for another thread
(e.g. whispers, dynamic admin creation, TS3 will have positional as well, but only mumble is opensource so..)

Re: Explanation of Mumble to Friend
Oh sorry, i didnt know that
But TS 2, thats what i was talking about. And imo mumble beats TS 2. Ventrilo too.. Since neither has Positional Audio nor is opensource. But is TS3 something we are going to try out?

I don't think TS3 is out yet so any claims of capabilities are yet to be proven.Wicca wrote:Oh sorry, i didnt know thatBut TS 2, thats what i was talking about. And imo mumble beats TS 2. Re: Explanation of Mumble to Friend
Seeing as TS didn't butcher my bf2 voip files, I'm not so sure I can agree with you there.Wicca wrote: Anyway, mumble is far supperior to TS and Vent. The end.
Also, I still don't understand the idea of voice latency as pertains to difference with mumble and normal bf2 voip, it seems there'd actually be more lagtime between talking and hearing if a program has to figure out your position and then the other client has to unpackage and set up the voice data as coming from a different place..I don't know, it just seems like mumble would lag a little in terms of voice.
Can anyone explain to me?
Players might be hardcoded, but that sure doesn't seem to stop anybody from trying.
The only winning move is not to play. Insurgency, that is.

YouTube - Mumble vs. TS2, Ventrilo - Transmission Delay (Latency)
Basically, mumble has less amount of time, from transmitt to recieve.

Re: Explanation of Mumble to Friend
First, computers process things really fast, so it takes a lot less time to figure out how to give the audio to you than you would think (about as long as it takes to figure out which direction a gunshot should come from). The latency for TS and in game VIOP is due to voice compression and transmission over the internet. They use a lot less data transmission and the result is the second or so delay between when you talk and when your teammates can hear you. With Mumble the data is transmitted a lot faster, which uses more bandwidth but the result is almost immediate transmission.mat552 wrote:Also, I still don't understand the idea of voice latency as pertains to difference with mumble and normal bf2 voip, it seems there'd actually be more lagtime between talking and hearing if a program has to figure out your position and then the other client has to unpackage and set up the voice data as coming from a different place..I don't know, it just seems like mumble would lag a little in terms of voice.

So as you talk someone will hear you on mumble. A second later they would hear you on TS or BF2 VOIP. It's the transmission that delays, not the processing.

Re: Explanation of Mumble to Friend
Well, Mumble is fantastic, no other words. It is truly a much more invigorating experience.
For example, my first Full match was on Muttrah, and we were in the suburbs, whilst advancing down a Long open road that came to the gas station, we had a Friendly APC for support and there was 2 squads, Our squad and the friendly squad, I (Auto-Gunner) advanced with the medic who needed to revive a downed squad. As we advanced we came under fire, and our SL was hit and down in the road. The Medic was still trying on the other squad but to no prevail, So now the other squad advanced along with the APC, and I moved out into the centre of the road against a car to scope around the Crossroads. As I was there a Friendly from the other squad called me over and asked me if there was any enemies there, so I moved over to him, explained the Situation, and then we both advanced to check out the area. The battle continued and we destroyed an enemy APC and we lost a few soldiers, but Mumble turns Squad warfare into a War.
