read the manual downloaded with the mod.
if you are a infantry player, start BASIC! join a squad and follow the squad leaders orders join a squad called "ENG VOIP" or "teamwork" etc . make sure you dont request kits or operate ANY asset without some training on a training server or LAN.

welcome, the learning curve is steep but once conquered the game is amazing.

Welcome!

There are TWO downloads, just fyi.

Get the CORE and the LEVELS.

Dont just get one or the other ;)
And also dont download the PATCH if you dont already have .85[which if youre just starting, Im assuming you dont]

Welcome, be sure and read through the manual, get a mic, find a good squad, and just give it some time.

Big things:
Dont move and shoot. You wont hit anything thats not right in front of you.
Use your ironsights/scope. Not scoping in will significantly decrease your effectiveness
Use your Mic and Voip!
Stick with your Squad Leader/Squad

And something you have to do from time to time: If your squad leader is telling you he doesnt care what weapon you take, doesnt ask that you stick with him, and generally isn't being an actual Squad Leader, do yourself a favor and find another squad FAST. I dont know how many times Ive tried to stick it out in such a "squad" only to find out I wasted a night of gaming. Youll know when youve found a great SL ;)

Anything else and we'll be here to help you out, but just focus on getting the basics, as PR is a pretty big change from BF2 in terms of the basics you need to know :)

thats a good point, being new squad leading yourself will be more hassle thats its worth so you will have to rely on others to lead you.

try and join a "teamwork" or "voip" squad. if you join mid game and there is room in squads, highlight them and see which squad is closest together, and see if squad leader has a officer kit (rank symbol as his kit)

And, once you know the basics: Consider downloading mumble. Many people use it now - basically, it allowes you to use voip to people outside of your squad, only depending on where they stand (positional audio: You hear it from the correct direction and only until a certain distance. You'll find a stickied thread about it here.)

Anyway, welcome to the forums, and listen to those people above (And probably below too) :)

no, just vanilla bf2 voip.

there is a program called mumble which allows you to talk to other non squad members if they have it. but dont worry about that yet the game has a big enough leaning curve :D

Typically? No.

You can hop right in and use Voip like in BF2

But there are a few servers running mumble almost exclusively [they say "Mumble Server" in their title most times. Those may REQUIRE you to have mumble installed. I know for sure that the RT Reality Teamwork Europe and North America Mumble servers require you have it downloaded. On those two, you can use voip or mumble depending on your squadleader...

But for normal games, Voip is the way to go...

*EDIT*
