The point I was trying to make is you do not get "feedback" on what you are doing. Feedback tells us how we are doing. you can extend this into many aspects of the game and life.
Maybe a sound, like the Radio fizzing could tell you that the Firebase is about to blow up?

keep the knifing, its a good placeholder, IF there are alot of enemies in an area naturally troops are not going to be deployed at said location weather the enemy are there or have moved on it is now enemy territory, The fire base isn't necessarily a structure it is there to simulate a foothold. there fore knifing it is a relatively good way of representing it being completely over run, instead of having to have a few guys sit around so enemies cant spawn while they wait for someone with explosives to show up.

Only revamp that needs to be done on the firebase-knifing system is some sort of warning. So many times myself and others have knifed radios, only to run back and see it not go off.

Then I/they run back to knife it a few more times, and SPLOOIE! Blows up on em and starts a bleed.

The idea: once a radio has been knifed and the self-destruct process is started, possibly change the radio static to a very loud and "broken" sound?
