Littlebird littlefail

Post by Snook »

Hi.

Ive been flying for a few months now and (I hope) can quite competantly fly most of the helecopters transporting people about. Good fun.

I cant find any threads about this but I can easily land a Littlebird, but has tendancies to randomly flip out for no aparent reason (even if my LZ is a bleeding hele pad). I usually try to turn the tail the same way as the flip but this usually resorts in failing into a wall/other hele/(enter object here).

And of course get the "OMG NOOBZORZZZ DONT FLY EVRAR" and such.

Can anyone give me tips to stop the little bugger from flipping out.

Cheers.

Agreed. :D

Anywho, try this.

Once your LB starts flipping hold down S (kill the throttle) and tip into the roll. Should straighten the heli out relatively safely.

Never seen a flipping LB. It's true that LB is very sensitive and jerky movements may cause losing the control but landing it is really easy when you compare it to Cobra or Apache, where one correction in wrong moment causes you to end up upside down. I became really careful when landing the Apache but still sometimes it happens that my chopper leans right and stops with the rotor against the ground - which is ok because all you need to you is jump out and wait until helo levels itself and is back on it's wheels. Apaches seem to be just really unstable.

@OP - I think you should try different controller, eg. if you're flying with mouse try joystick.

Dammit, my awesomeness has been foiled!

Thanks gaffer i'll give that a go next time it happens. I always have tried to reproduce it on training to work it out but it never seems to work.

And yeah it is flipping after landing, flying the thing is fairly easy with a bit of practice!

With the Apache landing (although I'm far less experienced with it) I actually find it a bit easier because you can kind of feel the wheels touch the ground and kind of lock in so it's stable, which i dont really get with other choppers (or i might just be trippin' )

Edit - Actually i prefer my title, come to think of it ;)

dont land in a vertical landing, always land with a angle of approach and slide.
IRL they do it too, after seeing a documentary about helicopters some pilot said its more dangerous to take off/land straight vertical instead of goin slightly forward

The problem if you are flying with a joystick may be that you are applying negative throttle which in the BF2 engine causes the helicopers to freak out. On other choppers it usually makes you slide but in the LB you sometimes start to flip.

Try not to use your rudder at the moment of contact with the ground, for starters. Also try not to throttle down all the way, IM not sure why but doing so seems to make the choppers act glitchy. Also don't hit the ground with too much forward momentum, but dont vertical land (You should never do that in combat) Come in smooth flaring slightly before you land. Doing these thing I never flip little birds. (I dont fly them often)

I'm flying with a mouse (I've got a joystick but could never get the hang of it for hele's)

Thanks for the suggestions guys ill put what you suggested into my flying and hopefully not fail as much.

Worst comes to worst, ill stick to the wuvvly hueys ;)

Cheers.

Like it has been mentioned before, you actually can prevent every chopper in game from getting destroyed by being flipped by using reverse throttle and oppositional rolling.

I'd suggest, you create a local trainings-server, and flip some choppers on purpose just to get a feeling how to get them back.

I think your problem could lie here:

If you have succesfully touched down, you can tap backwards to make sure you dont roll over, but don't keep it pressed (same for joysticks: don't keep your throttle fully negative)
I think that should do it actually

It's safer to just know how to land properly, and just adjust per situation.

If you're transporting some guys to a friendly position, feel free to slow it down on approach and take your time to land them safely; they'll appreciate it much more than a FUBAR skid run.

If you ever roll a littlebird, here's a tip: Hold A or D (left or right tail rotor) in the direction that points upwards, and don't mess with much of anything else. After a spin or two, you will get a rise off the ground and land back on your skids if you do it right. And don't be afraid to do so; the worst that can happen is it doesn't get unflipped, right?

(For clarification... if the littlebird is on it's right side, you'll hold A. If it's on it's left side, you'll hold D.)

I believe Red hit it on the head.
Tapping "S" instead of holding it will help you stay landed... If you do not tap "S", the throttle will actually neutrallise itself. About the time it starts the nuetralise- you begin the roll over right? I use a joystick so keeping the throttle negative at about 10% keeps me perfectly still without the little sliding forward action that everyone else gets.

If you have ever landed and sat there for a sec holding "S" and then start typing in game, the heli will automagically nuetralise the throttle and it will start to roll over becuase of it.- As long as you type fast, you can usually get right back to hitting "S".... if you are a little slow you end up with what this post is about... some roll.

to prevent that from happening you need to land it straight, as in you're w is in line with the false horizon i think they call it, the two lines on each side of the w,

and do not kill the power, it won't happen like this because you're till in a hover but on the ground this way you can land, might take more time to land properly but it makes a nicer get away.

I have never had any of the things mentioned in the thread happen to me.

Guess I must just be charmed.
