What are the three artillery icons and how do they differ?

As you all probably know when loading a map it shows which artillery asset is available

Correct me if im wrong but they are:
Mortars
Artillery
Jdam

if so, what is the difference between the three types? Specifically mortars and artillery, but i also want to know what the jdam is

JDAM = Joint Direct Attack Munition. In real life, it is a cold-war era dumb-bomb with a cheap GPS guidance unit strapped onto it. Extremely cheap and very accurate. The range of explosive power is limited by the plane that carries it. In the game, it is just one bigass explosion, and it creates a large smokescreen.

Mortars and artillery, in game, are basically the same thing, except artillery is much stronger. Mortars will scatter the area with small explosions (powerful enough to take out light vehicles and FOBs, of course.) Artillery will scatter the area with high power explosions for a similar duration of time and over a similar area, much more effective. Just think back to vBF2 artillery. It is the same thing, just less vanilla-y.

Mortars also are 30min instead of 60min

JDAM's not all too handy for the most part, unless it's changed since I last used it. Mortars and artillery are more useful because it's harder to hide from.

The JDAM has been dubbed as the fail damn because of its not to predictable landing it has been seen to land against a building and explode sidewards and the explosion isn't as big and the smoke cloud it produces iirc.

lol true! I love watching the fireworks too! I will halt an assault so my squad can check the explosions :-) !

Today on Muttrah, I got JDAM'd on top of a roof. It hit about half the smoke radius away from me, and yet I survived. The only one who died in my whole squad (on a roof top) was the leader, whom it landed on.

JDAMs tend not to work too well, particularly on Muttrah. Once my squad plus a couple smurfs was on top of a building and ate a JDAM literally 10 feet in front of me in the middle of everybody. One guy was bleeding out and another needed a bit of heals, but that was it. Another time we had a couple MG nests, an AA, and a foxhole with our squad in them on the NW slope from the fortress, took a JDAM, nobody died, and the fox and one MG nest were still up. Makes one epic sound/smoke display though.

JDAM needs an overhaul. One way to "fix" it would be to make it several explosions instead of just one. Having many invisible lethal projectiles, without explosion effects or sound, land within the blast radius, and the thing will be far more lethal - you won't be protected by standing behind a tool shed ten feet away from the JDAM's impact point.

As I have said somewhere at some time, I saw a jdam land on a bunker about 3m away. (this was .7 I believe). The jdam blew up the bunker and no one took any damage. I had a squad spread out nearby and yet no damage to any of us. We just shrugged and rebuilt the bunker.

Artillery on the other hand, is like god's fist striking the earth, over and over and over and over again.

Daumn safekeeper beat me to it. Make several micro projectiles to make sure somebody isnt spared because he is standing on another level of the jdam impact, or shielded in some way.

Is it standard procedure to drop a single bomb on those runs? I'm not too familiar with air support of that kind.
