Oh well, it seems that once again DICE just couldn't make a good patch..
I installed 1.5 patch on BF2 1.41 installation and PR 0.87 right after that. I tried to play vanilla to see if there are any changes in the hitboxes, just to notice that when joining a server, it just pops up "Your CD-key is not valid" message.
Well, I re-entered the key from the .exe in the BF2 support folder and reinstalled 1.5 patch. Didn't help.
I opened up registry editor, and noticed there was no folder for BF2 entries in the place where it should have been. I created new entries and entered my CD-key (with the x9392 thing in front of it), but no, it didn't work.
Is complete re-install the only option?
OS is Vista 64-bit.

Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2\ergc
in the registry, and double click the (Default) key. Enter your Battlefield 2 key without the dashes, but with ALL CAPS on.
Make a new folder in
C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES
and call it Battlefield Too.
Now, go back to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2
and change the "InstallDir" key to "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield Too".
Now run the BF2 1.41 patch; it will take your unencrypted CD key and encrypt it. Let it completely finish, and after it's done go delete the Battlefield Too folder.
Now you should be able to play the game without the CD-Key error.
