I could be wrong, but I think he meant the weapon would be swung around to the back BUT while still on a combat sling. Not the "sling arms" position hanging off the right shoulder, but just swung around to the rear and out of the way.
Depending on what I was doing, I myself would sometimes swing my rifle around the rear if it would get in the way of my current task or if I felt I was going to use another weapon/tool for an extended time. But if I was simply "stripping" my primary weapon to grab my sidearm or support weapon/device, I would just drop the rifle against my chest.
It's all going to depend on the individual soldier and what they are doing. If you are just swapping to your pistol because you don't have time to reload or are out of rifle ammo, you're probably just going to drop the rifle and let it hang at your chest. If you are grabbing your e-tool or getting ready to prime a charge, you'll probably fling the weapon around to your back.
I think it would be great to see our kit visually displayed on our characters even when not in use. Being able to see which soldiers around me have an M136 available for example would work both for the good guys and the bad guys. Even little details like mags in pouches or IFAK/dressings on the shoulder. But I don't think this is possible with the game engine. I'll let one of the coders reply with a definite answer on whether it is even possible, or if it would be desired/worth the time.
And please note, my new "Dev" tag is due to military adviser, not coder or artist. So if my opinion is it probably can't be done, that's just opinion.
