Unattended Ground Sensors

Post by eruffini »

I know the topic of "motion sensors" has been discussed before, but this is not about motion sensors!

Basically, the US Army has a piece of equipment that is called the "Unattended Ground Sensor". Basically, it is a sensor that monitors seismic and acoustic activity in the vicinity.

For PR, I think this would be a special addition for the Commander to have. With a limited quanity of sensors, they could be used to "keep an eye" in remote areas, as well as in choke points - such as the bridges in Qwai River.

The way the sensor could be used in game is that if there are enemy vehicles or personnel wandering around in the radius of the sensor, it would post an alert and a marker (or perhaps a constantly updating position) where the enemy is.

The sensor could be planted the same way as a mine, and could be destroyed if discovered or even ran over by accident. Only the Commander would have access to the sensor and only he could see the information, which would be relayed to the Squads.

I think this just might be one of those the players will love, but the better knowledge of the developers says otherwise. I think its a good idea, there would be a lot of thought put into placing these correctly.

This sounds like the "informant" mechanic for the Insurgents.

Interesting.

Its a good concept, it could be used well, but like alot of things in any army, they say they'll issue one thing but it never happens.

Is this actually being used extensively, and is issued to alot of units?

Sounds nice, but a limited number only, also might help to bring more COs to the front , as the UAV is very tricky (for me anyway).

I like the idea, and we know it definately can be done.

Though isn't this part of the future combat system that took a huge budget cut?

all the pictures are of it being used in training areas, has it been deployed overseas?

My only question on this would be; is it in general use with the armed forces in combat, or is it simply a prototype or only actually being used in testing scenarios atm. If it is being used in combat, i'd like a source plox.

If it is only in testing then it'd be a no.

The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "

you place a LZ marker, and that becomes active after 5 mins iirc, any vehicle or squad moving past will generate a report for the commander's eyes only.

Indeed.

The thought that pops up in my head is a lil' thingy an engineer can place. Whenever something moves within the radius of the device the Commander gets an icon or marker indicating that there is movement near the device.
But nothing specific. So don't let it pickup any unit in particular. it can't identify if its infantry or armor thats moving past. Just that something is moving past.

You can use this for insurgents but then it WILL be able to 'spot'. because its not just a device but a 'person' telling the commander where movement is.

I think this will make the commander job a lot more interesting and the engy kit for that matter.

The UGS system was part of the Future Combat Systems suite, but it is now part of the "Army Brigade Combat Team Modernization" system.

There are a few NCO's that I know that have used these, and they say they are pretty fucking cool and badass for a device like it is. I believe units helping Border Patrol and Homeland Security use them as well.

If this was implemented, it should be limited to Commanders only so that they aren't "abused". Maybe make a "Communications Specialist" kit?

well, I can tell you about this from first person hand on experience.

These sensors are called UGS. Unattended ground sensors.
There are T-Ugs and U-Ugs, for Terrain and Urban

My unit here at Ft Bliss, is part of the AETF(Army Evaluation Task Force) and we are testing these. Along with the UAS trash can looking UAV, the irobot Sug-V remote controlled robot, and many other things I probablly shouldnt be talking about.

without getting into too much detail, these are still under development, we tested them last summer and gave our input to boeing and other companies that make the objects. They are re-making them and will be re-testing them this up coming summer. Therefore they will not be used for a few years.

The first ICB will be fielding and training with these in 2011 I believe. However will not use them deployed until 2012 from what I remember.

This looks to be, just one of those suggestions that are very plausible. Only one problem stands, read above ;) . This would probably be better implemented in a later version, just like in RL.

Thanks for the info mate.

Hold out on it ruffini, its a great idea but if you really put up a good system with kits and pros and cons and stuff it will definitely get the devs attention.

A Signals/Communications Specialist kit would be great, if it had some other stuff as well.

Lol imagine if PR kits ran off the US Army MOS's..

If your telling the truth, Yes should not be talking about this, At least not the name of your unit, or where your stationed. You get executed for things like that or worse.

But if they don't kill you give as some more (less sensitive information on this new weapon).
