[Map] Operation Mountain Cleansing (4km) [WIP]

Post by otomotopia »

Well, its my second day here. Time to... Make a map?

I've had this Map idea floating around for a while after having the privlige of visiting the beatuiful country of Costa Rica. Around half of the bends in the road, I could totally picture Admiral Ackbar shouting "Its a trap!" That country is prime for ambushs. Costa Rica would make Vietnam look like a cakewalk.

My idea is making a mountainus, forested, slightly urbanized map.

Now, why choose costa rica as my subject?
Because this is every road in Costa Rica.

What's past the bend? Another one? Or an AT round?

Now, the terrain is actually like this in populated towns. Add some shanties and dirt switchback roads and you've got the average community.

Yes, it's sniper's heaven.

Some ideas I'm considering:

Strategic objectives for AAS would be
-.25km X .5km shanty town
-a police station
-a major interesection
-a small airstrip
EDIT: a separate .25km X .25km town
-the two starting areas.

Several hills would be significantly important as they would contain buildings with prime views of the terrain and include essential kits in them.

Gameplay on this map should focus on finding the enemy, manuevering to establish favorable combat situations, ambushes, and communication. Infantry leads the way on this map.

I'm in the conceptual phase for this map. Suggestions? thoughts?

That is one hell of a big town - I think you should possibly focus more on the hills and forests, as it would be a great environment for combat if you are basing it off Costa Rica.

Costa Rica aye...... What factions do you intend to use? I'd say Private Security contractors vs Insurgents (of some kind). PM me about it ;)

Your proposed town would be the largest ever created in PR. Not to mention it would take up 75% of your map, and it would take a long, long long time to create a quality city. Nonetheless if you have the confidence to do it then it will turn out to be quite an interesting urban map if you create it properly. Have you thought of the type of factions that would fight in this area, or what placeholder factions you would use?

start with something easy i would suggest. don't get on to making the biggest city ever in PR ;)

other than that this might well be very cool :)

I meant .25x.25. My apologies.

I'm thinking more PMC's vs militia with or without Chechen rebel load out. The 'backstory' would be Costa Rica is being invaded via a raid by the Cartels, and the military is responding.

The Costa Rica Military is more of a police force, so the faction is apt. As for the militia faction, I think its a great choice to simulate Cartel soldiers. A slightly more realistic equipment load out for the Cartel would be that of the Chechen faction, but then again, a Cartel soldier's equipment varies from country to country, faction to faction.

Jonny wrote:Stop talking about assets and factions, you dont get to choose what assets go on your map, AFAIK. Just concentrate on making the map worth being added to PR.

Those steep hills are going to make it quite difficult to avoid horrible morphing without the hack thats around somewhere.

Those roads are going to be pretty much impossible to make. The terrain tiles are 16 square metres. Statics cant be made to blend in with terrain, so would look horrible. The one thing that might allow you to get good results out of the roads is to make the road itself as a series of statics. That would allow the fine detail, and also avoid the problem of blending in with the real terrain as you wont want roads blending in. Even with this method, corners will be very difficult to make.
Thankfully, most roads in Costa Rica are basically wide, winding, level, glorified footpaths. The hills are also glorified. In reality, that's the costa-rican mountain range. The CR hills are basically giant versions of Fools road. I understand the restrictions with the tools, and am working around it by building footpaths into the terrain.

Also, thanks for that heads up on the assets and factions.

I'm sorry, useful for...?

I'm starting work in editor later today, I'm gathering pictures for ideas and also getting a gauge from the community.

Ah! Sorry, didn't catch you there. Forgive me, I'm somewhat new to the PR map process. I'll try and gather some images before I head off to work. If not, they'll be up tomorrow.

i wouldnt say making a 4km map is better for the gameplay just because you can trow more vehicles into it. i would say that the gameplay is better on korengal than kashan.

I agree with this 100%. Personally i prefer the smaller infantry maps with ground support to the full asset maps. However keep in mind that this all comes down to personal preference. Some love Kashan, others do not :p
