Are you using file>import rather than file>open?

Thats odd, as 3ds files are normally backwards compatible. Where did this .3ds file come from?

Just install SP2 pack and it should work fine (install the pack in the same language as your "licence")

make sure your exporting the model as a .3ds and not just saving it as a scene then trying to open/export it in the other versions.
