Alright, during the past month the "stopped working" errors have really peeved me off. every time i tried to boot it would crash with that error. this is how i solved my problem:
basically, have you read a tutorial telling you to change your bf2.exe to bf21.exe or to a different name? although the rumors may be that this improves game performance, this actually prevents mods with independent .exes from operating.
the fix is simple, rename your bf21.exe back to bf2.exe. i did this with project reality and forgotten hope 2 and has fixed problems on both mods. i discovered this after the forgotten hope .exe said "bf2.exe could not be found".
if this is not your type of problem, then i'm afraid i cannot help you, this is just for people who have followed the renamed .exe tutorial lurking around the internet that apparently improves performance of bf2. post feedback below.
For those of you encountering "stopped working" errors read this

I can assure you that changing the name of your BF2 exe will in no way improve performance. Sounds like someone is spreading malicious advice in order to deliberately muck up peoples mods.Slick82 wrote: basically, have you read a tutorial telling you to change your bf2.exe to bf21.exe or to a different name? although the rumors may be that this improves game performance, this actually prevents mods with independent .exes from operating.
A general rule of thumb on any windows system , is do not rename system files, or files like executables or assemblies. Also do not move or delete system folders like "MyDocuments" or "Program Files".
