VOIP/microphone problem/Fixed!

Post by biscuit123 »

Hello,

I was unable to find a thread detailing this exact same issue. I've started using a new system on which to play PR, and now I can't transmit or receive VOIP (I can't hear anyone, and noone can hear me) all other sounds are fine. My mic works fine and everything, I can go through the BF2 VOIP Setup thing and I can hear myself ok when doing the mic check and adjusting the capture threshhold. I can change the settings (transmit/receive volume etc) in the audio options in the game itself and apply them, however the settings seem to reset themselves, when I open the audio options again the settings are back to where they were before I clicked apply.

I'm not muted in the tab -> player menu ingame or anything, and I've tried muting and unmuting to no avail. I'm using XP SP3 and an onboard sound chip. I'd be very grateful to anyone that can help me as obviously this completely hinders my ability to play PR.

Maybe you have set the receive and transmit volume all the way down, by accident?

No I haven't. The little green speaker thing at the bottom doesn't show up when I hold 'B' so it's not a volume problem. I just realised I should have probably specified the mobo i'm using. Having done some googling I discovered this thread. I'm using a similar board to the guy in that thread, with an onboard Realtek AC97. However my problem is slightly different in that I cannot receive nor transmit.

Please list specs...

I've gone through similar issues. My board has a soundblaster Audigy 4 card and the drivers didn't get along with xp a while back for some reason, but I found what the issue was, I hope this might assist you.

Try the following...

Make sure you have the latest sound drivers, reinstall them if you can.
In BF2 options, make sure settings are correct for sound.
*Some servers have VOIP desabled*, troubleshoot with more than one server.

Do you have other mods installed? I once had setting issues with other mods like AIX, Air Maps, POE, Stargate, etc...

Hope this helps.

Well I don't know why the specs are important other than the mobo/sound chip.

XPSP3
EPOX EP-8KDA3J (NVIDIA nForce3-250 Socket 754 with audio, SATA, 1GbE LAN)
Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB
1GB RAM
Edimax 802.11n PCI adapter (Model: EW-7728IN)
Relatively cheap Creative headset I got with a webcam. Works fine, no problems with the headset as far as I can tell.

No other mods installed, all settings are correct (at least for a few seconds; see first post where I talk about the settings resetting themselves) I have tried several servers and all of my drivers are up to date :(

Is it only your sound setting that keep reseting? What about control settings, or any other settings?

Make sure your BF file is in My Documents. If it is, try deleting it and reseting your ingame settings.

Also, have u tried manually unistalling BF2?

And to make things clear for me.. you can't receive OR transmit voice ONLY through BF2, right?

Make sure 'mike boost' is checked 'on' in Windows.
Try to record a small audio clip with Windows to test.

Or in game:
Not able to use VoIP
Did you try pressing tab, right click to activate mouse and click manage, then mute and unmute yourself? That seems to work most of the time.

Good luck

Now that you mention it, my control settings do reset too (but only between my computer being on and off, they do not reset during the course of PR being running, unlike the audio settings). I have to delete mydocuments/battlefield2/mods/bf2/cache everytime otherwise PR won't start. I have just uninstalled BF2 and PR and reinstalled it (in the correct sequence, with restarts etc) and no change. That's right, can't receive or transmit. BF2/PR is the only game I have that uses VOIP, so I'm unable to test it with another game or anything.

After starting PR after the reinstall and playing around with stuff this is what I found:

I just noticed that VOIP works for about two seconds at the start of a round. I can hear and transmit for about two seconds, thereafter it cuts out for the rest of the round.

Here's another weird one; While I am not connected to a server, I am able to change/adjust all audio settings (albeit they do reset). However, when I am connected to a server and press esc and go into audio settings, the first few settings are greyed out (hardware/software, and I don't remember the rest, I think there are three in that first 'section') the 'English V0 Only' option is also greyed out. As soon as I disconnect from a server these settings are no longer greyed out.

I'm able to record audio clips in Windows fine. Also I can't mute or unmute myself in game, as there is no VOIP icon next to my nickname. VOIP actually appears to disable itself in game.

As far as 'Mic boost' is concerned... funny thing just happened. I checked that before the reinstall, but I just went back to look and it was not checked, and 'mute' was also checked in the volume control, which was unchecked before the reinstall. I checked 'Mic boost' and unchecked 'mute' and launched PR.

This time I got a good one minute worth of working VOIP (able to hear and talk to squad mates, VOIP icon next to name in tab -> players) before it cut out. I closed PR and returned to windows and 'Mic boost' was disabled and 'mute' was enabled! So it appears that not only are the in game audio settings resetting of their own accord, but the windows settings are too! (I bet they're correlated, so stop windows settings resetting = PR settings will also stay stable, but I have no idea how to do that).

I'm having the same problem, except there have been no changes to my system.
BF2 disables the VOIP option when i join a server, and the server had VOIP enabled(it worked one round, and not the next)

I cannot transmit/recieve, and it works fine everywhere else, AND IN BF2(as long as i'm not connected to a server). The mic even works if i alt-tab out of a round in BF2(with this problem) and test it in Xfire or TS.
Also: if it makes any difference, my mic is actually a Playstation2 USB mic, bought used for $10. Going to get a good one, but needed an interim mic till then.

I have a similar problem that i put in different topic around the same time, except mine works for a few mins then randomly cuts off in the round, the only difference to my system is switching from usb headset to a jack one.

Ive begun having problems with this fix. Whenever i turn down the acceleration to none my ventrilo inbound causes problems were people sound a bit static any i cannot understand them easily. Its solved the ingame problem but has caused another, any one have any ideas on this? Do i have to change codecs or is it another problem?

additional info:
when i put it down my soundmax audio O becomes (emulated)

Edit:

alternate fix if any one gets the same problem as me:
http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pid=505856

Hi all! I am new on this forum, and a bit older in PR.
Had similar voip problems as biscuit123. Wiccas solution was the cure.
Well, thank you Wicca! Youre solution really helpt me fixing my VoiP. But, i got another problem:

When playing with voip turned on, i get connection failure all the time. Its looks like playing a super laggy game, with normal ping, which, sometimes arent grater than 10 or 20. Thats case one.

Case two is that instead on some servers i get a "flying ping". The ping is maybe 11 or 35 whet it suddenly gets 170, 290, 500, 980, 1010! Then it "calms down" and returns back to normal in 2-3 seconds. During those "flights" i experience a laggy game, and some times even get kicked from the server for "too high ping". This woud not boughter me if it happend one or two times per a game round. But the time between those "ping flights" sometimes are less than 5 seconds. They are not depending on any action in game, appear suddenly, only if voip is on and are very annoying.

Do you or anybody else have a solution for that?

Edit: I found the solution myself, here, on PR forums.
